Ok so I realized recently that I've let my coding skills stagnate a little and want to get them back up on par. So I figured what better way then to create some gun tracking software! So what kind of features would everyone like to see in a gun program?

You mean something like GunTrackerâ„¢ 2.2 (http://www.kelleyarms.com/guntracker.htm) ?

Diesle: That's what I'm asking you for :P

hkmp5sd: Yeah I guess something along those lines, except with whatever features it might not include that everyone would want.

Just think of what you might want your computer to do for you in relation to guns that it doesn't now.

I found a FREE program called 'nmCollector'

Think I got it from http://www.collectorpro.com/

Anapex, I program in VB, and keep thinking I should write something specific to gun collections. But after I start I can't decide what direction it should take... generic, or very specific.

One thing, it needs pictures, and it needs usage logs. And it needs to print out a C&R format acceptable to the feds (only C&R people need it, but it is a good generic ownership log format).

I want it to have reminders, so if I'm good about putting in my round counts, it will tell me when to replace springs at manufacturers intervals. Also keep track of any malfunctions, so I can decide if they are ammo, user or guns fault.

Oh, and I want it to be able to talk to my Palm, so I can input range data while I'm at the range, then update the home PC later.

Is that a good start?

added: I went and checked the collector software mentioned above. They don't look like what I want. I don't want the value of my collection, I want to know how it was used. Range dates, competitions, etc. And it's unique history, if it was not new.

It should know what organizations I belong to, and remind me when dues are approaching. Splash screen should be selectable to be a favorite gun pic or the 4 rules.

Ability to show videos would be nice, too. My DVD collection software does that. If I ever shoot a .50 BMG I want it recorded.

As a minimum I'd add the items shown on this page: Firearms Data Sheet (http://www.memorableplaces.com/m1garand/afirearmrecordsheet.html)

Since your software will be dynamic instead of printable like the above you can do lots of neat things. Also you arnt really pressed for space per-se.

I agree with adding photo capability. I'd add the capacity to add thumbnails as well as LARGE format photos since details are important (as we all know.)

I'd also consider making sure that you make it printable and also EXPORTABLE to other formats... pdf, ms word, even excell perhaps.

Lots of work there, but makes your product a lot more flexible.

Take care,
Charles

And PocketPC. Not everyone uses palm anymore ;)

Hehe if I was gonna do a handheld device port I'd probably do it for my Zaurus. Good ideas though so far. After I do something planning I'll see what I can whip up.
