What was that thong thing that dangled on the bottom on the Military 45 1916-pattern holster for?

To tie to your leg so the holster wouldn't flip around as much on horseback.

Or sliding through tank hatches, or jumping out of airplanes, or any number of other things a solder might do and doesn't want to get slapped silly by a 1911 banging him in the ribs.
