AK FAQ / Primer

Hi Folks,

I'm thinking about purchasing an AK rifle. I'd like one primarily for plinking and like to get something that isn't too expensive, but relatively accurate within 100m (i.e., able to hit a large steel plate at 100 yards, not a bullseye). I like the AK because IIRC they're not too expensive and they're rugged (I plan on shooting steel case ammo, and not cleaning it very much if ever).

What is the going price for a decent AK-type rifle? What are things to consider when selecting an AK? I've read about Saiga rifles from EAA, but I think I'd like to find a military style AK if they're not too expensive. Where are good sources of these style of rifle?

My primary concerns are to buy a reliable gun, with adequate (but not great) accuracy, and not spend too much. are decent AK type rifles still available for < $400?

Are there any good forums/FAQs/threads that provide a good introduction to the AK (selecting, owning, shooting, and maintaining)?

Thanks!

Yep...SAR1 is calling to you.

The sites above are some good ones.

If you buy a SAR1 just make sure you inspect the weapon prior to purchasing. I had thought that they cleared up the canted gas block issue, but they haven't. Just last week I saw a 2003 dated SAR1 with a canted gas block. The best way to check is to hold the rifle away from you about waist level and pointed slightly downward. If your gas block doesn't line up with everything else on the rifle it will be immediately evident.

If you order one make sure they will accept it back prior to ordering if you aren't satisfied and get a canted gas block.
