I'm in the market for a S&W wheelie, with about a 4 inch barrel, in .38 only. I can buy new, or I'll consider a used Smith that has been cared for. Unfortunately, there are so many model numbers out there, and I can't make heads or tails of them. Any suggestions, please?

Model 10, Model 64 and Model 67 are your currently-catalogued choices. I'd vote for the Model 10, but I'm hideously biased. ;)

I agree with Tamara on the choice of the M-10 but would offer one other suggestion a M-15 Both can be found as ex-cop guns for a really good price.Prices less than $200 are out there if you shop.the M-15 offers the additional advantage of adjustable sights. If you can spend just a little more money look for a M-28 a N-Frame that offers both the ability to fire .38 and .357.These three while they are not the only choices,do represent three good choices.

My choice was predicated on his specification of ".38 only", and the fact that he may need to get a new gun in short order, rather than search for a good used Model 15. I'm assuming that he needs it for work...

Fair enough, just giveing him a couple of other choices to look for as he is shopping.Any one of the three would serve him well.

Model 10/64

Model 15/67

That's it in 4 inchers and the model 15 is only available used.

Since he needs ".38 only", if he wanted an N-frame he'd need to find a good Model 20 or 23. (Both of those models were discontinued in the mid-'60s, however, and command healthy collector's premiums, so that might be kinda rough. :uhoh: )

I suggest a nice used Model 15 (blue) or Model 67 (stainless). They have an adjustable rear sight that is easier to see than the fixed sight on Models 10 and 64. I sold a Model 15 a long time ago. I shot it as well as anything. I just bought another one for $225.

I would say the M-10. Mine cost $120 with some holster wear. Fixed sights, just an all-around great revolver. It's my primary carry as well.

I agree with Tamara, go for the model 10.

They can be found cheap and are great shooters. 64 if you want stainless. I prefer fixed sight handguns..............UW:cool:

Chuck, read this thread while you're at it . . . and buy used, not new.

Model 15, the best shooter of all the smiths.
