Barrel possession question

I know I could find this out with a little work, but I was wondering if it is against the law to possess a SG barrel less tha the legal lenght if it is not attached to a receiver? Would it just be considered a part and not illegal if not on a gun?

ATF has decided it is illegal, regardless of whether or not the barrel is actually attacked to the gun. However, if your neighbor does not own a similar shotgun, it is perfectly legal for hiim to possess a short barrel. :)
