The NYT bestselling, gun filled, monster shooting, action/horror/fantasy, novel series that originated on TFL and here on THR is back. #4, Monster Hunter Legion, is out today.

For those of you not familiar with this, I originally wrote Monster Hunter International because of a Lawdog thread about horror movie lines. It was edited and proofed by the other THR mods. Then after getting rejected by everybody in the publishing industry, I self published it and sold it on gun forums. It was a huge hit, so then I got a publishing contract for Baen Books. It just sort of blew up huge after that.

A few years later I've published 7 books, have 18 more under contract, across 5 series, and I've sold the TV rights to MHI. Book 4 is out today.

Link to Amazon.com Monster Hunter Legion (http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Legion-Larry-Correia/dp/1451637969/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346792091&sr=8-1&keywords=1451637969).

Because I usually get a ton of THR folks at these, here are the dates/places for the Monster Hunter Legion book tour.

September 5 - Layton Utah B&N 7-9PM
September 6 - Burlington, MA B&N 7-9PM
September 8 - Hicksville Public Library, Hicksville NY 2-4PM
September 9 - Carle Place, NY B&N 2-4PM
September 11 - Willow Grove, PA B&N 7-9PM
September 12 - Mercerville, NJ Book Trader of Hamilton 7-9PM
September 13 - Ellicott City, MD B&N 7-9PM
September 14 - Bethesda, MD B&N 7-9PM
September 15 - Ft. Belvoir, VA Base Exchange 12-2PM
September 16 - Fort Meade, MD Base Exchange 1-3PM
September 18 - Minneapolis, MN Uncle Hugos 5-7PM

I'll be back in the South next year. 2011's tour was western states, 2012 is eastern. 2013 looks like Texas and across the south. I'm doing LibertyCon in Chatanooga and I might be doing WorldCon in San Antonio. Not sure about DragonCon yet, but I love it.

Churn out another Grimnoir and I'll take you off my "slacker" list. Working on that now.

Tremendous! Although I am also disappointed you wont be here in AZ on the tour. I read Alpha last year soon as it came out. At the time I happened to have a sickness that caused feverish hallucinations and strange vivid dreams/confusion with reality for about three weeks, during which I read the book. Most of the weird mental things revolved around werewolves and Harbinger. It was quite a ride and I literally felt like I was in the book; a few times I didn't realize I wasn't in it. The buckets of cough sirup and other meds I consumed probably didn't help matters. Any way, it was definitely a unique book reading experience. If I wasn't so miserable sick, it really would have been really cool.

It's a pain to buy fron Baen. Your books need to be on Amazon.
Baen offers more options than Amazon. You can read the Baen e-books on a Kindle, just move them into the Kindle folder. Only a couple more steps, really.

I would like to point out that the reason Baen e-books are not on Amazon is because Amazon will not put up content without copy protection. Baen has made a commitment to DRM free material. Larry would have to switch publishers to get his e-books on Amazon.

Yep. And it costs pretty much nothing to have Baen mail the book to your kindle. Something like $0.18 per megabyte sent (Amazon's fee), but the book is smaller than a meg.

Unfortunately, the Kindle edition of the first book is only available from Baen.

Not to be argumentative, but when comparing the ease of going to Amazon and buying a Kindle book compared to Baen's procedures, I am sticking w/ the former. My iPad is filled with unread books I bought from them.

I just checked a local B&N yesterday and they didn't have it. Sold out, I suspect, because this is where I bought the others.

No worries, though...I'll continue to find a way to put my money in your pockets for your books! I was hooked on the first one because it was FUN reading!

Maybe I'll get a chance to meet you at Ft. Belvoir...but don't take it personally if I opt out of that for overtime opportunity that weekend. I've got bills to pay, too, you know!

Oh, and by the way...I've one serious criticism on your writing:

You write a LOT slower than I can read, dude! Seriously, you know how aggravating it is to finish one of your books and be wired up for MONTHS waiting for the next?

I remember when I first read some of Carreia's work, when I discovered the old Nightcrawler story. Then I bought Deep Six, and I held off on MHI because I'm not normally into monsters and all that.

But then I found his website, and to someone who likes to write fiction for fun his advice was pretty good. So good, in fact, that I decided I would give MHI a try, if only to support such a great guy.

I just finished MHI this weekend, and now the rest of the series is in the mail. It was easily the best book I've read in a long time. I look forward to spending some more time in the sometimes wacky but always epic world he has made.

Thanks Correia!!!

I'm just finishing up Alpha right now; I'm already composing the review in my head for my blog. Suffice it to say that I like it, and Earl Harbinger may well be the best protagonist since Hiro Protagonist.

Poper, from what he's said on his blog about it, they're mostly waiting for Mike Kupari to finish unwinding from his recent deployment. Larry's initial write on his side is done. Of course, I could be misreading his blog entries entirely. :)

Larry, do you have any advice on how to convert the Hero system to a D-percentile system? :D

FatCat, if the fact that the length of the list of firearms used in his novels could rival an IRS appendix isn't enough, how 'bout the fact that Larry's been here since The Beginning of THR?

Indeed, Shamadin, Mike is currently up to his eyeballs in Sword of Exodus, aka Dead Six 2.

Any chance of a Dead Six sequel? My half is pretty much done. Mike's is close to done, then we just need to edit the two together. It is called Swords of Exodus.

Well, gee whiz FatCat. If you're gonna jump in and pseudo moderate a thread you should probably do it when it new rather than a month old. :p I am glad to see that despite my retirement from modding that some things never change, and there is always somebody helpful ready to come along and tell the mods when they're wrong.

By the way, and I got mod permission. They said yes, probably because I was one of the founding mods on this board, like member #5, wrote the first book in the series based on a gun forum thread, the rough draft was proof read by THR's members, and the cover was designed by THR's founder, and I became well known by writing fiction on THR, oh, and then when I self published it I sold it on THR, and then the little gun forum book that could became a national bestseller. Fast forward a few years and I haven't forgot my roots.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it. :)

Larry,

In the middle of Legion right now.. Love it. I "borrowed" the MHI smilie to use as a Facebook photo, already had about 20 folks asking about it.. I just point em to http://larrycorreia.wordpress.com/mhi-sample/

Hope to see you in Texas next year!

Larry, if you don't mind me playing pretend mod for a minute...why not make a separate thread on the Monster Hunter RPG? Seems like a separate accomplishment to me, but it's buried on page 4!

I'm unfortunately still halfway through Alpha, so I haven't gotten Legion yet, but your stuff is really good. And this is coming from someone very picky about books.

Thanks, Larry.

I wanted you to know I truly enjoyed reading "Dead Six" as it developed here on THR. That was a very unusual and interesting way to write a novel with each author writing from a different perspective. And to more or less do it on the fly! Awesome! It's the whole reason why I bought "Dead Six".

I thought much of the editing was well done for the published version, though I wonder about some of the changes and omissions. Some were obvious, but some less so. To say I enjoyed the read would be a gross underestimation. Very well written, very well plotted.

Though I enjoyed the joke, I hated to see Precious get shot. I love poodles.

How is this any different from the Zombie survival guide, which wasn't allowed to be discussed here??

judging by the cover (dont do it!) the Zombie survival guide was actually more useful. It was a basic survival guide that instead the natural disaster or terrorist was changed to zombie. The zombie survival guide is actually useful to get people thinking about survival in a fun way. this appears to be a sci-fi book about killing monsters..... Big difference and way more THR....

How?

Because we knew him before he self-published the first MHI book and sold us a bunch of them. Autographed, with a patch included.

Sheesh... Still with this? Wow. I sure am glad you are able to define what is "way more THR" than the moderators that run the place.

As for the Zombie Survival Guide, maybe if Max Brooks had been a THR member then maybe all of his gun advice wouldn't be complete crap. Heck, on that note then the military scenes in World War Z wouldn't have been completely ridiculous too. (looking at you, Battle of New York, that I could have won with a single bulldozer) :D

But hey, this gives me a chance to say that there are only a few days left on the MHI Employee Handbook Kickstarter! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/herogames/the-monster-hunter-international-employees-handboo
