Compact 9mm

Ok, here's what i've come up with so far. I selected guns on the following characteristics:

-9mm
-Capable of eating +P+ all day
-Weight of 1.5lbs or less
-Preban or hopefully post-post ban magazine capacity of over 10 rounds
-Not what you would traditionally call a DAO (capable of a short reset 5.5lb trigger pull)
-Easily concealable dimensions
-No need to use manual safeties.

Here's what i've come up with in no particular order:

-Glock 26: Sure it's ugly, but it is all of the above and has an excellent reputation for quality and safety.
-Steyr S9: Some concern over the safety of this gun has been brought to my attention, but it's supposedly incredibly accurate, low-recoiling and has a great trigger. It is kinda rare though
-Springfeild XD Sub-Compact: It's the Croation Glock. I like the Grip Safety. It managed to be uglier than the glock (in it's subcompact form).
-HK P2000 Subcompact: Ok, it's not available in the states yet, but i won't be carrying for another 2 years anyway. It's an HK and i've never shot an HK and been dissapointed. As far as i'm concerned, the best reputation and quality...oh, and highest price.

What would you get or do you have another suggestion to add to the list?

Well, I voted "Other". While it won't fall within your
weight restrictions, it does qualify as a "compact 9m/m"
in all other areas; I will nominate the SIG-SAUER P228.

Best Wishes,

I have a Glock 26 and a Steyr S9. The Glock is what spends time on my hip.

Aw shoot. I voted HK, but then saw the "other" category.

So, I'd choose a Walther P99c (compact). Three trigger options. Not out yet but there's a few threads on it if you do a search. The HK would be my second choice.

I voted for the Glock 26. It's rugged, accurate and can take high cap pre ban magazines from the larger 9mm Glocks.

Kahr P9 Covert. Accurate, good trigger, and 15 oz empty.

I voted Glock26, but since you have two years until you are going to carry. The Walther P99 Compact that was announced could me another good option. It's hard to say until you wear them, a certain one might poke you in a certain way, or the grip might not fit your hand at all. The adjustable grip size of the Walther and HK would work well then. But for overall "it will work" I voted for the Glock. Kahrs are nice, but no hi-caps.

S9

I don't see that there is a lagit cause for fear of safety problems, and if it's as good as my M40 it's gonna be a great gun. I'm trying to work out a deal to get my hands on one now.

Hard to beat the Glock 26 in the categories you mentioned. They take G17 and G19 magazines, parts and accessories are readily available, and they have a proven track record.

Other. A CZ PCR is my carry weapon for the times when I can't carry something heavier. Light alloy framed, da/sa with decocker, cheap (under $20 ) 14 round mags available, very reliable, great ergonomics. What's not to like?

Some guns being mentioned don't have the 10+ round capacity that he is looking for.

My first suggestion would be something like the Kahr TP9 (missing two rounds) with Novak sights. Very slim, very consistant trigger.

Out of those listed, I'd probably go with the G26 and a Ghost Rocket connector. Shortens the reset and lightens the trigger pull just a bit.

But the TP9 is definately slimmer, weighs one or two ounces less and has a longer barrel as well... I'd go for the Kahr, but I'd feel very well armed with either one.

Beretta 9000s----takes 92 hi-caps----and is a true double/single action----can be carried cocked and locked ----has a frame mounted safety/decocker.

Main complaints are hard to grab slide and a thick grip---but neither are all that bad.

I own one---but its a .40.

I've carried a Kel-Tec P-11, a Star Firestar Plus (alloy frame) and now carry a CZ-75B Compact (similar to the PCR mentioned earlier). All three are good guns that I like better than some of the choices offered.

I'd say the Glock 26 fits your critera best, but you might want to consider the Glock 19 as well.

just a couple of comments on the "others"

A lot of them are excellent choices, however, i had to draw the line somewhere and i decided 24oz or less is the weight cutoff and 10 rounds is the capacity cutoff.

Don't consider any of the below bashing on your guns, as they are all excellent choices.

Sig 228, despite being one of my favorite guns, did not make the cutoff.

S&W CS9 simply does not fit my 10 round capacity requirement

Walther P99 just missed the cutoff for weight and was a bit large, but the compact version looks like something that fits the bill. I will look into the quick action version of the gun as i'm not particularly fond of DAO or DA/SA without an exposed hammer. (personal preference)

All Kahr guns, i'll make an exception for kahr's DAO as it is excellent, but it still doesn't fit my capacity requirement.

Kel Tec p11 fits the bill, but i'd still prefer not to. The quality control of kel tecs is sketchy, and despite the fact that they have an excellent warranty, i'd hate to need to use the warranty in a gunfight. I also have concerns about this gun fitting my "Eat +P+ all day" requirement.

All CZ's missed the weight cutoff. Sorry.

Question about the CDNN steyrs. I heared that the finish on them was iffy. Anyone care to clarify?

Question about the ghost connector for the glocks. Do you think the rocket (3.5lb pull) might be a bit light for a carry piece? They do make a 4.5 and 5lb connector as well.

Looking at the polls today and it seems the glock is way ahead. I gotta say, and i thought i'd never hear myself say it. The glock recently has been looking rather enticing. I think a G26 with some grip extensions, night sights, a stainless guide rod, some robar trigger work and polishing would make a Glock i could actually love. Anyway, unless one comes up cheap at a gun show i got two years to decide.

I have found the S&W 3913 very hard to beat. It has a very comfortable and slim grip. Mine has been completely reliable with all types of ammunition. It is not a target pistol but the accuracy is very good. Price , quality, size make it a terrific value.

The smith and wesson doesn't fit the capacity requirement or the weight requirement.

The kahr doesn't fit the capacity reqiuirement.

Anyway, went to the range yesterday and rented a glock 26. I must say, i was hot stuff with that little gun. at 7 yard distances i was putting every shot midline on an FBI shilouette from the head to about the bottom of where the sternum would be. approximately 0.20 second splits between shots, so i was flying. Mozambique drills at 7 yards were a non event at similar shooting speeds to the above. Modified mozambique (2 body. 2 head) also went well. There were only 3 shots all day that missed the target. 2 of them were on mozambique drills at 7 yards before i got aquainted with the glocks grip angle (just above the top of the head) and 1 was a half inch to the left of the shilouettes neck on an 11 shot magazine dump at the same distance.

I was shooting a bit high on the first few drills with the G26, and this is likely due to the different grip angle it has versus my other guns. After i got used to it and did some dry firing, and some practice shots without using the sights to figure out point of aim, i was dead on.

At 15 yards i could still hit the shilouette with quick bursts of fire and aimed shooting yeilded a tight little cluster of holes. I am very impressed with this glock. My father was similarly impressed, though he has to work on his combat shooting a bit...though hearing good words about the glock from my father (a diehard 1911 user) was most unexpected.

I also have to note that it had supprisingly light recoil with the standard UMC practice loads. The trigger was actually perfectly acceptable for a stock gun. Would have liked to put some of my rangers through it...but i wouldn't consider it polite to put +P+ ammo through a rental gun.

I wish i could get my hands on an XD for comparison.

another question, does anyone make an adaptor for the glock 26 that allows you to use larger glock mags. Like, something for a glock 19 mag that would extend the grip? Preferably something that slips onto the magazine and gives the appearance of fitting flush?

That would be nifty for spare magazines...not as much of an issue if the ban expires and the 26 is brought back to it's natural capacity of 12.

Glock 19 mags will fit in a 26, but what is the sense of a compact pistol with a big old mag sticking out the bottom. If you want more then 10 rounds and still want to conceal the gun use a mag pouch and carry extra mags. If you are in a position where 11 rounds isn't enough, then I want at least 10 more not just a few more in a larger magazine.

Moparmike

It doesnt have a big mag, but have you looked into a Kahr PM9? They seem pretty small, but I am unaware of their +P+ friendlyness.

I wouldn't get too hooked on a gun while window shoppin if you have 2 years to go. Is that before you buy it or until you get your ccw? A lot of guns will be coming out in the next 2 years to change your mind again! :D

That's not what i was saying. a 10 rd mag in the gun with a glock 19 mag as a spare. I was just wondering if there was something that made it a little more ergonomic since i need a finger extection on the stock mags. Yhat would be 11 in the gun and 15 more on the hip.

Don't worry about it, i have no plans to buy at this time. it'll probably be a 21st birthday present to myself. I want a good rifle and a service size revolver first.

While you're choices were all quality models. :scrutiny: I'd recommend anyone wanting a 9mm for carry to look at a HK P7 series model. It doesn't exactly fitall your criteria however. I do find them very easily concealable and the most natural and simplest auto-pistol I have to shoot. Personally, I see no relevance for +P+ needs (when is this gonna happen for extending sessions?)

I also have to mention that the SIG 239 shouldn't be excluded either. I have shot these and these are very fine models as well.

pbhome71,

That's a pretty cool piece. Does it fit on the gun or on the mag? If it's on the mag I guess you have to take it off each time you change mags? That or buy a few of them.

You know, that really doesn't look much less concealable than a standard 10 round mag with a finger extension. I would have thought it sticks out more.

Negative on the sig and P7...they really don't fit the criteria. Not blasting on two very excellent guns, just not what i'm looking for. I really had to draw the line somewhere.
