I have never fired a handgun with a ghost ring rear sight. What does a ghost ring rear site do for the shooter? Anybody out there ever used one and did it help or hinder your accuracy?

I put 50 or so rounds through a Glock 21 equipped with a ghostring rear sight. While that is certainly not enough to constitute an informed opinion, I will share my observations.
I found the sights to be fast to acquire close in (10 yards and closer), however My accuracy at range (25 yards) was about eight inches. Peers who have considerably more experience with the system echoed my observations.
My performance may have improved with more practice, but I left with the impression that any potential advantage offered with regard to speed was outweighed but poor accuracy at longer ranges. Obviously, based on your requirements, you may find this acceptable or you may obtain different results.
I hope this helps

The proper operation of a peep sight requires that it be close to the eye. So it works well on shotgun or rifle. However it does not work well on a handgun since the peep is too far from the eye. Near the eye the peep is automatically centered to the eye. For hanguns there is no better sight than the Patridge.

I've never used them but they sound interesting. They do have some available at www.enterprise.com, pg 107 of the Feb 23 issue of Shotgun News.

Some folks like a ghost ring sight at the rear sight site.
Must be hard.

I have a Sig 226 with a ghost ring setup. I've been shooting it for about 4 months. The rings very fast for distances from 7-10 yards. Beyond 15 you will still hit a paper plate but it takes some practice. Do a search for "Ghost Rings" you should find plenty of info.

I tried one on my Redhawk Hunter in an effort to get rid of the scope for better balance, but still have long range capability. It was pretty much a disappointment. No real improvement over standard iron sights as far as group size. Faster to aquire a good sight picture though. After messing with it a few weeks I have the scope re-mounted. Its the only way I can be consistently in the bull at 75 yards and up.

Thanks everyone for your comments. My interest was simple curiosity. I agree with METE that "peep sites" work best on rifles and in some instances on shot guns. Thanks again. John

Strange, because I shoot perfectly well with a ghost ring on my Ruger Blackhawk and Marlin 1894C. But I do believe, while one can shoot accurate with it, to another it is totally confusing. Different sights for different folks.

After reading all this stuff on the INternet about how they suck past X amount of yards, I gave 45R's a try. My groups at 11 yards and beyond weren't any worse than with traditional sights, but I'm not a very good shot, either.
As for past 25 yards, for distances I like to disengage and/or grab my Benelli ;)
