Scope for my FAL

I was finally able to get my FAL back after having sold it to pay bills. It is at the smiths right now having some work done and checks made to ensure it is safe.

My next step is optics. It is a FAL, and while it is rather accurate, it is not a precision rifle so I do not need high power super expensive scope. I am looking for something mid powered, 2-7x is ideal. Not looking to spend more than $500, less would be great but I understand you get what you pay for. So what are my options?

SARCO has some Stanag mounts, with the pic mount adapter. A nice Leopold firedot scope in 2x7 should do nicely. If you hunt hogs get the "Hog Recticle.":D

Bushnell has a rebate on the Elites.
Might look at the Burris MTAC 1.5-6X40.

I have heard good things about the Burris scopes, but that reticle looks cumbersome. Is it better than what the pics make it look?

I haven't seen that reticle in that scope. Based on the Burris scopes I have seen, I agree with you.
Burris, Bushnell, Leupold, Nikon, Vortex, Weaver all make hunting type scopes in that general size. Can't think of many tactical-looking models.

I've been looking for a scope for my FAL for a bit now and think I have found a real gem.

http://www.nikonhunting.com/products/riflescopes/monarch/2-8x32_BDC_RETICLE/8438

The 2-8 power is very handy, not as much magnification as I may like for punching paper but for my intended use it's perfect. I only intend to shoot out to 500 yards max. with the FAL I have in mind. The rifle it's going to sit on will be used as a general purpose, medium range rifle; which is where the FAL really shines, in my opinion.

It's a pretty compact scope and does not weigh too much, would like a bit lighter but I can live with it's 13 oz weigh in.

The BDC reticle on this scope, at 6X, lines up perfectly with my 165 grain Sierra Game King Hollow Point rounds for 100, 200, 300, and 400, yards. The 150 grain spitzer boat tail is close enough for me.

If you want to look at this type reticle in person stop at Wally-World's sporting goods department and look one over.

I suggest that you get your FAL home, find out what round it is most accurate with, play with Nikon's BDC software and find the scope w/BDC that works for you.

What do you intend to use the rifle for?

The rifle is just my .308 mid range rifle. I will use it from time to time in the local tactical rifle competitions but all we shoot is steel, and i know it does that well. I just wanted something better than the irons that will allow me to have fun with it. The very longest range I will shoot is maybe 600y with 400y and less being far more common.

I have a DSA scope mount dust cover on it right now so mounting will not be that tough.

I know it shoots the 7.62 147gr and hand load 150gr good enough for me. I run a Nikon M223 on my AR and like it so Nikon is just fine. Other than that big sign on the turret cover...

In your case I'd look real hard at what Nikon has going on with their BDC.
Download the Spot On software, plug in your loads info and browse through the models they offer. I think you'll find something that'll work for you.

Have you seen where people will mock up their scope, on that DSA mount, identify the rail lugs(or whatever they're called) that would interfere with the ocular and bell of the scope, then mill/file them off so the scope can sit lower?

It's said to help a lot.
It'll let you get an actual cheek weld, not a chin weld.

P.S. That Nikon has pretty good eye relief and that goes a long way on the FAL.
