"Smith & Wesson Model 629-1 (Pre-Lock) - Serial# N932541 - Mfg. date 1983 - .44 Mag./44 S&W Spl. cal., N-frame, 4 in. barrel, 6 shot, stainless steel, adj. rear sights, and factory wooden stocks with the original box and paperwork dated 5-23-83 and tools. This is in very good plus to excellant condition, used very little. The bore is bright and shiny with good rifling, and the lock up is very good, no signs of wear that I can see. This would be a great addition to any Smith & Wesson collection, or as a home defense or duty gun if desired."

I have a chance to buy this 44. The guy wants $600. I'm leaning toward low 500's. Anyone know what this is worth? I got rid of a Taurus Tracker that was giving me fits and need to replace it. This is a definite upgrade but I don't want to pay too much.

They are not going to get cheaper!

You could probably find one for $550...but after sales tax, I'd still be $600 out the door. I think something over $600 would be tough to bite off, but for a nice gun, I've overspent. I mean, who hasn't?

If it makes you smile when you pull that crisp, light trigger, AND you have the money, buy it. BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT! Haha. $600 is a good price.

You never pay the first offer; of course there are a lot of people who will and you are left wishing you had. What's it worth to you? That's your counter.

Start at $550. Maybe you can meet @ $575, but $600 is a fair price.

600 sounds decent. It's a "life time" quality gun to me and even if you think you paid a tiny bit too much the cost will catch up and you won't be one of those whiners always 10% behind the current prices and never getting your hands on it.

I like what Apache said. You must know prices but it still depends on how much you want it. If you try too low you will lose it. how much does that matter to you? n:)

$600 is probably a good price in N.Y., around here it would be a tad high. You do know that the -1s were pre-endurance package?

If I could get one for $600.00, I'd grab it and giggle all the way out the door.

You do know that the -1s were pre-endurance package?

That's why I'd want it.

I'd pay $600 for it, too, since I find the pre-lock stuff to be emminently more desirable than the stuff that came afterward.

$600 is a great price here in OR. I'd pay that to a friend, but if it's someone you'll never see again, talk him down a little, or see if he wants to swap for your newer Taurus!

In a world where plastic pistols are $500. and up one could argue this gun is "worth" $600.but what's so special about a 1983

I wouldn't have second guessed and it would be sitting on my nightstand right now

For the condition you indicate, $600 is a good price. It should sell quickly.

I don't care much for stainless handguns, but, I do know a good 4" Model 29 or 629 is getting tough to find. I'd go for it, but only because it has the box and accessories..never hurts to offer a lower price, tho.

you'all know a new one is $800. right?

what makes a 1983 collectable? not from S&W finest years.

Yeah, and I might offer you $400 for a new one. ;)
A pre-lock in nice shape (especially with box and tools) at $600?
Hell, yes.

I wouldn't pay much over $500 for it. But I am a dealer.:D. $600 would be a very good retail price.

I'd offer $550 but would pay the $600 if you really want the gun. Seems like a fair price.

I've been pricing that exact gun for a while now. They go for $600-$650 on Gunbroker (sold ones, not listed price). I'd pay $600 for it because that's the going price. I am partial to the blued ones, though. Tough to find.

Very fair price and it will do nothing but increase in value. After you buy it you'll chunk rocks at Taurus'.

While I was sitting around fretting about parting with my money, someone offered him $600 for it. I gave him $625 and took it home. I ran some pretty stiff 240 grainers through it. Piece of cake, accurate also. Ya gotta get a good grip on it before you touch it off though. What a pleasure to have the gun go bang each time you pull the trigger. Quite a step up from what I was used to. I'm glad I parted with the money. It's bigger than I thought, and heavier. I think I'll keep it

625 was a good deal

as to the assertion that you can buy a new one for $800, please understand that it is the same gun in name only

I still think you did good at that price.

In a few years that gun will go for way more than you paid so i wouldn't get anal about the price.

$600 would be a good price to me. It's really hard to find good used S&Ws around here. I keep seeing used ones, even roughly treated ones, going for over what the news ones cost.

You can always go to Gander MT and if you find the same thing pay a lot more!

I wouldn't be so sure, the great deleveraging is still going on, as credit dries up I expect prices of all nonessentials to go down
