I am considering finally taking the plunge and getting my first NFA firearm. I want an SBR, but not for the reasons normally given. I love back country squirrel hunting. For years I used a lightweight rifle. a few years ago I switched to a handgun. this was great for the walk in, but my skill level with the handgun forces me to limit the range to 35 yards or so. I bought a 10-22 charger and I love it, but I would like it alot more with a folding stock. It is my understanding that I cannot turn the Charger into an SBR legally by adding a stock, but I can modify my 10-22 by adding a lightweight folding stock and a 12 inch barrel after filling out the necessary forms and paying the necessary taxes. Am I on the right track? any suggestions for this project would be greatly appreciated.

Once you pay your $200 sbr tax, you can put it in whatever configuration you would like (sans full-auto of course).

Just to be clear, you can turn a handgun (like the Charger) into a short barreled rifle by paying the tax stamp first, and then putting it into a stock (or adding a stock). Or you can turn a rifle (like a regular 10-22) into a short barreled rifle by paying the tax stamp first, then chopping the barrel down short or replacing the barrel with a shorter barrel. And once it's a registered short barreled rifle, you can put any sort of stock--regular or folding--on it that you want.

I think this is a brilliant reason to get a short-barreled rifle. If you've got the cash for it, I'd go ahead and submit a second tax stamp at the same time and pick up a .22 suppressor at your local Class III dealer. Just imagine not having to wait for the squirrels to forget about that loud gunshot they just heard...
