OK, that wasn't fun

Lots of you found the blog.thehighroad.org site where I was posting updates. I've modified the failure page, so in the future you can just click a link and be there.

Sorry we were down for so long. I think things are running cleanly again, but I reserve the right to be cautious. :)

I'll be keeping an eye on it, then I'm having a beer, and I'm getting more than a couple of hours sleep tonight.

Sorry again -- there's a strong chance I'm going to migrate the database from MyISAM tables (the ones vBulletin just about required when we started) to a more robust table type that should prove to be more resilient in the future. The upside is that morning backups won't interrupt board viewing for those of you on the West Coast (or the other side of the world.)

The down-side is that the migration will take hours and we'll need to re-tweak the database for performance once that's done.

Thanks, and sorry for the outage.

Derek,

"Basic, run of the mill database corruption."

From one member whose 12 year computer skills consist of the 'click' and 'double click' (both of which I am considered an expert should you require outside counsel - copy and paste, not so much yet), I THANK you for both your efforts to repair and your getting the message to us via the error page.

What they said.

But at least I finally got off my butt and got some much needed fall yard work done!!

Maybe you should schedule this every fall in late September?? :D

Thank you for that, and all your hard work & dedication to keep THR the best there is!

It really is amazing how much you miss it when its gone. I cleared my cookies and browsing history three times as well as refreshing my browser thinking it was my issue before finally sending an e-mail.

Mad props, Derek

Oh my God. It got back up just in the nick of time. I was in a corner, sitting down, hugging myself and scratching my arms like a crackhead for two days. You saved my life, thank you.................I can quit any time I want though.

Hey finally a data crisis that didn't involve me getting up and driving to a datacenter 3 hours away at 3AM!!

(There's an old rule of thumb stating anything that happens to your servers/routers/network gear after 2AM cannot possibly ever be fixed from home, even though we have all of the most fancy remote access technology ever devised by man-kind at our disposal.)

Wife: "Don't answer the phone"
Me: "I have to answer the phone."
Wife: "I'll get your boots and keys."
Me: {tapping answer} "Pack my laptop too..."

20 years ago a phone call at 2AM guaranteed that a close family member or friend had died.

Now it's servers... databases.. routers.. and the problems you face at 2AM are never end-user "between the keyboard and chair"...

Sucks.

Anyway, thanks for getting things up Derek. :)
