Why is THR web page down so often?

The recent +48 hour outage is disappointing since I rely on the forum to provide relevant and timely information and feedback.

I joined a competing cite that does not have the same problems because I cannot rely on this sight being availible when I need it.

Well, I visit other fourms, but I like THR, their fourm seem to offer more of what I like/need. Agreed the down time is :banghead:

Well you are free to do as you please but there are a few threads explaining what happened. The 48 hour outage was not normal at all. And unless you count the daily backup that takes place at something like 0 dark 30 and lasts for all of like 15mins I can not remember the last time THR was down for a long period of time.

You pay exactly how much for all the information that THR provides? You NEED the information so critically within a day that you get here for free so much that you complain about an unscheduled outage (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=8422434)?

You have got to be kidding.

Good luck at your new forum.

I would make sure that all the fee's you paid to THR for all that past use were promptly refunded, too.......

Please cite an example of how this site being down has proved to be critical for you?

Sorry I had to. Now off to look at my rear sight thread

Yea!

Too bad, so sad.
Watch out the screen door don't slap you on the butt on the way out.

I hadn't realized yet, after a few years, THR was a life & death Internet dependent source of all information gun related.

Although I did suffer some withdrawal systems yesterday?
I did manage to get some fall yard work done I would otherwise have put off until the snow covered it up!

In case you care to find out what happened, or not?
Here is the reason for the outage:
http://blog.thehighroad.org/?p=85

Maybe you should offer your services as a free database consultant if you can foresee this kind of thing way in advance, and fix it before it happens!

Instant gratification is the new black. I find that younger folks require an answer right away or they feel cheated somehow. No intention to offend I see it with family and neighboors, they want it now, and if they don't get it, they leave. That's life, you can't make everyone happy.

http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc401/mesinge2/Misc/Troll.gif Some of us really enjoy it here and have been here for years. Its free and the administrators and mods work hard to make it a great place for us gunners to chat. I am a moderator on a different site and I perform some technical support there and it is not easy sometimes; especially for a non-paid job. I am still here and will remain here because of the great people I have fostered relationships with and because the staff really want OUR experiences to be enjoyable. So don't expect too many people to side with you with a post like that.

As an aside the op must be rather new to the internet especially gun forums if he hasn't yet realized that no one "cite" can possibly satisfy the addiction to the sweet sweet boredom release they provide.

I have to point out that volume makes a big difference in how stable a site may be. We have a very large volume of activity at THR and we have a lot of information on the servers and yet we get by on a shoestring with Derek spending hours keeping the hamsters fed and their wheel greased (try keeping a hamster wheel greased that moves constantly at racehorse speeds in a dusty hamster cage!).
Other sites may be more stable because of lower volumes and less info and more money spent on something more advanced for servers, but I doubt theres a site providing more with as little as THR is.

First off this is the first extended outage I gave seen here, second why do you feel entitled to free stuff. No offense but the idea that you are entitled to something that is not yours and you did not pay for is absurd. Be thankful we live in a time where places like this are free to use and try not to take it for granted

Well, if it was 48 hours the board would be coming back up about 12 hours from now.

Not that I'm proud of the downtime, but it wasn't that bad...

Please don't give the OP too hard a time. He really is trying to learn how to spell "site" and that has clouded his judgement.

Seriously tho, I too did miss the forum, but I can't see how I can blame anyone for something unforseen. Moderators, IT guys, keep up the good work. We appreciate you!

You know, it takes a lot of testicular fortitude to bash on an incident that couldn't be helped by the forum administration. They got it up and running again, didn't they? You should be happy about that.

You sure are pretty demanding, for being a member of a forum that doesn't charge it's members anything for upkeep. Derek could, by all means, charge us for usage of this site, to ask for a percentage of the proceeds from a sale on the Trading Post, or impose a fee for whatever it is you do on this site. You do know doing this isn't cheap, right?

Anyways, I've said my share. Thanks for all you do Derek, and other THR Administrators. Your work is greatly appreciated here.

"...I rely on the forum to provide relevant and timely information and feedback."

Y'know, when a tragedy of this magnitude occurs, about all a little fella can do is run to the bedroom, turn the electric blanket up to nine, assume the fetal position and get a really good lip-lock on his thumb.

Really what was do urgent that it negatively impacted your life and you couldn't wait 48 hours for VOLUNTEERS to fix? Unsure if 9mm or .45 was the round of choice for zombie bear home defense?

Sorry, that probably wasn't very high road. I, too, suffered withdrawals...

One of my favorite motorcycle forums is having a whale of a time these past couple weeks with compu-gremlins so when this site went TU I got to wondering...

In any case, the OP has me thinking. I'm kinda disappointed too and if I don't get me membership dues back in a timely fashion, well, there's gonna be an electro-hissie the likes of which you've never seen.

Well, as soon as I can find my payment statement and the THR "terms of service" contract. then watch out, I'll be comin' on like gang-busters!

Back in the day's of old, when the president was a fellow from Hope, I, would start to down load a page on Shooter's, (there is a blast from the past), and then go and take my shower. If my computer didn't crash, and if my provider didn't bounce me off, I, would have a nice page of text.

In other word's enjoy what you have you dang wipper snapper's it was harder in the old day's.

That, and, was a time when a fella had to beg, borrow, buy or steal a book or even - ((GASP)) engage in real world social intercourse in buying, enjoying, modifying and repairing one's firearms.

The mind blowing wealth of free information and exposure to the experiences of folk you'd otherwise never interact with still strikes me like found-money sometimes.

What a world. The occasional cyber-hiccup only serves to underline how important these forums have become to some of us.

I had something witty to say but whats the point? The OP has been soundly spanked. And laughed at.

I thought this was one of the most reliable sites (sights, cites) I am on. You should try one of the R/C model plane sites (sights, cites) I visit. They are off line as often as not. They have gotten better. But nothing like THR.

When I noticed the "cite" was unavailable last night it was bedtime anyway. I was gone all day and when I tried a while ago it was back.So I guess I can say I didn't really miss it.

Yeah, it was torturous that it was out that long. I certainly expect my monthly bill to reflect the outage. Not only that, but I had to wait for an answer on something really super important! The answer to the 9 vs 45 was supposed to be posted, but now I missed it.

I'd like to post the pic, but I think it may run afoul of a copyright rule, since I don't own the image. Here's a link to Google (https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_mss=curlbill+well+bye&tok=qunXY9PuqVwGhCsyJBuEYA&pq=bill+well+bye&cp=5&gs_id=la&xhr=t&q=curly+bill+well+bye&client=firefox-a&hs=8ck&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&biw=1265&bih=687&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=S4ZiUJyYEYPc8ATD-IGYCA#um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=2xP&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=curly+bill+%22well+bye%22&oq=curly+bill+%22well+bye%22&gs_l=img.3..0i24.32677.34875.0.35410.2.2.0.0.0.0.77.153.2.2.0...0.0...1c.1.1_PzOD383_w&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=7ba5d84905af2387&biw=1265&bih=687) that seems appropriate.

All in all, it really wasn't a big deal. Keep up the good work Derek and the rest of the mods.

We've said enough on this to make it clear that THR was sorely missed during the 12 hr crash and that Derek did yeoman's work getting it back up and running by himself and his operation of the site is highly appreciated.

For anyone who uses the site to make a personal profit or as a critical element in the RKBA struggle we appreciate how important it can be to have THR up and running and we appreciate your support.
