guitarguy314 September 26, 2012, 11:56 AM Hey guys!
I read about people wanting custom made guns all the time, but every time I search for a gun smith who could do that all I find is people who customize existing guns.
Where would I go if I was looking for someone to make me a truly custom made gun?
Thanks,
L
Also please note: I won't be able to get any sort of custom gun for a long time, this is just me being curious.

smalls September 26, 2012, 11:59 AM Depends on what kind of gun you're looking at customizing. Some smiths are pretty famous for doing 1911 work, but I probably wouldn't send a Glock to them.
guitarguy314 September 26, 2012, 12:05 PM Sorry if I was unclear, but what I meant was, who could build me (like from scratch) a custom gun? Something exotic and bizarre like a semi auto in 45 colt, or a double lever action rifle? I'm not talking about sending in a 1911 or glock, I'm talking about sending them ideas and a boat load o' cash. XD
Kyle M. September 26, 2012, 12:36 PM How about a bolt action double rifle?

That is actually really cool, but it still doesn't answer my question. The two guns I listed are just examples of the sort of work I would be looking for. Again, I'm looking for someone to fabricate a gun, not hone or customise an existing one.
Thanks for posting that though.

Mr. Nelson might be able to help; how does a smokeless 2 bore sound? Here are some pictures of one of his smokeless 4 bore rifles; comes with one round ball barrel, a conical bullet barrel and a little baby 700 nitro barrel.

Fleet September 26, 2012, 05:31 PM A gunsmith isn't necessarily licensed to manufacture a gun. To be a gunsmith, all you need is a dealers license. A manufacturers license is separate.
dirtyjim September 26, 2012, 05:32 PM you want a gunmaker not a smith, and you better have very deep pockets.
i know of a few but would need to know more about what you have in mind and your budget before i would even start to recomend any one to you.
also keep in mind every part would be made specific for that project and could easily run $15,000+ in machine time alone.
Jim Watson September 26, 2012, 08:28 PM There are a very few experts making truly custom guns, built from scratch.
But they do tend to specialize.
You cannot reasonably call somebody up and say: "I want a way kewl custom gun, fix me up."
The guy who has the shotgun in the works with titanium receiver and high strength steel barrels to keep the weight down and an individually fitted stock to keep the recoil from being too uncomfortable is in the $200,000 category.
So figure out what you want, have a large budget, and start checking around with a real idea of what you want and a serious plan to purchase.
guitarguy314 September 26, 2012, 09:38 PM dirtyjim: Gunmaker! That's what I keep meaning to say.. haha. yes. I am in no way looking right now, I just want to know who is out there willing to do things like that.
Jim Watson: Even at that level they specialize? Interesting. 0_0. That seems high (to me) but I'm sure the titanium isn't helping the bottom line any.
For arguements sake, let;s just say that I wanted a double lever action rifle. Basically two marlin 45-70's in s SxS formation. Two triggers, but one lever mechanism *by this I mean, fire both shots, then have one lever to pull and it puts rounds in both chambers*
if that would be legal. Bluing, walnut stock etc.
Jim Watson September 26, 2012, 11:49 PM I am sure there is somebody out there who could build you a double lever action rifle, consider the double 1911 pistol. But I don't know who.
And once you found him, you would have to convince him to do it. It would be time taken from other jobs with extra time and expense to design as well as build it.
Sam1911 September 27, 2012, 07:36 AM And once you found him, you would have to convince him to do it.
Indeed. A craftsman at that level tends to make things that make sense. Things that are beautiful and have a clear propose. Not (usually) novelty oddities that are, in use, less than the sum of their concept parts.
For a master maker used to crafting $100,000+ weapons, asking him to make some bizarre and kind of useless oddity like a lever-action double rifle might just insult him. Sort of like asking Michaelangelo to paint a velvet Elvis. ("But, no, like a REALLY GOOD one...")
TITAN308 September 27, 2012, 10:57 AM Or something like this perhaps?
.308 that recoils and stays cool like a .22 (would seem pretty unique to me!)

guitarguy314 September 27, 2012, 09:24 PM Thanks for the responses guys!
Wow. those are some nice guns. How's the recoil on that 2 bore? Still have two shoulders?
The recoil of a .22? That's nice. Looks like a gun on a megazord I owned when I was 7. haha. Extremely cool.
I honestly hadn't considered that aspect of things. I just envisioned throwing money at someone till they agreed to make it, or were buried alive under one dollar bills. haha. Is something like my idea too far fetched for anyone to make? I know it's not a conventional modern day type gun, but...it might just be me.

American Guns show has made some incredible guns for celebrities and others with cash. It seems to start at $5000 or so. If that works for you then look them up. Incredible stuff....
dirtyjim September 28, 2012, 06:28 PM building double based on a lever action wouldn't be all that difficult, but it would be very time consuming.
basically you would machine the action to have intergal mirrored left hand action, stagger the triggers and lengthen the lever to match the double triggers.
25cschaefer September 28, 2012, 07:36 PM The recoil from one of those 4 or 2 bores is pretty horrendous but, Mr. Nelson is approaching 80 yrs old and still shoots them. The whole gun weighs close to 20lbs; with a 2200gr bullet going 2200ft/sec, you need it. The maker's pet load is an 1800gr bullet with 175gr of IMR 4350, pushes it at about 1900ft/sec. If you ask him what you shoot with it he will tell you, "Anything you want."
25cschaefer September 28, 2012, 07:52 PM I forgot about a really cool revolver I saw this summer at school. Sorry, I do not know the maker's name but he is building it for himself with the help of a machinst friend.
This is a 12 shot 357 Maximum plus 28ga. Like a b--a-- modern LeMat.

To avoid any confusion he choked it down to .50 cal and rifled the last 4 inches.

When people talk about opening a can of w----a--, they are talking about opening this pistol and loading the cylinder.

dirtyjim September 28, 2012, 08:42 PM i've shot a ken owens 4 bore double and the recoil was not bad at all but the gun weighed 26 pounds. of the three of us that shot the 4 bore it only knocked one of us back about 4 or 5 feet but he probably weighed 50 pounds less than me and squatch.
that gun was sold recently for just under $120,000.
the guy that owned the 4 bore double is having a 2 bore underlever double built right now.
