Question on 777 cartridge load

This is my first post in the BP section, needless to say I'm a newb to this!

I have a couple lbs of Hodg. 777 FFG left over from a cannon project. This past weekend, I loaded up 40 rounds of 32 S&W longs with the FFG, Fiocchi brass and CCI small pistol primers. The projectile used were 100 grain FN Missouri Bullets. Everything went well, accuracy was ok but I wasn't going for that. Just plinking. All in all, very fun!

Now, the question...

I'd like to move up to the 327 Fed Mag. Same powder and projectile mentioned, Federal or Starline brass and most likely a small magnum pistol primer, unless suggested otherwise. I have standard SPP's and also small rifle primers which are required for some of the hotter 327 loads. There's not any info that I can find on this. I have however found 357 Mag loads using FFG, so I figured the 327 is do-able. It operates in standard factory form at a higher pressure than the 357 Mag.

Any input, suggestions or constructive criticism welcome. Thanks in advance!

Just fill the case so the bullet just touches the powder when seated. You do not NEED magnum primers, but if that's what you have they're OK to use.

That's only with FFg. Hodgdon's does not recommend using FFFg in any cartridge.

Slow Fuse,
I load all my .357mag brass (nickeled) with FFF 777. I had already worked up the load before I read that you weren't supposed to use the fff size powder. I figured the 357mag was a pretty high intensity round and never worried about it. My loads probably compress the powder a good 1/10 of an inch if not more. I put 15grs (measured weight) under a 158gr lead bullet in the 357. I believe you could get into trouble loading larger more black powderish calibers like the 44-40 or 38-40 in a weaker action like the winchester 66 or 73s using full tilt loads of the FFF 777. I don't believe you are going to get into trouble with a small caliber magnum cartridge using the FFF size powder. I've used both standard and magnum primers and couldn't tell any difference but I wasn't going out of my way to look for a difference. I just use them for SASS/CAS matches in my two Rossi mod 92s and (rarely) my Cattlemen.

Thanks for the input, both of you. I haven't gotten around to this yet. I have been occupied with a rifle load in my (very little) spare time.

I'm looking forward to it though. I'm going to try this weekend to get a few loaded.

I have loaded .45 Colt with 24 grains (volume) of Triple Seven (777) FFFG with a 200 grain SWC .452 boolit. The 24 grains of 777 didn't fill the case so I added nitro cards (wads) to fill the air space. There should be no air space in the cartridge with either black powder or 777.

Just reporting back...

I loaded up a handfull of these this morning in federal once fired brass. Used the regular small CCI pistol primers and 100 grain Missouri FN bullet.

3-4" group at fifteen yards (still just plinking, not trying too hard) and plenty of smoke! Lots of fun! It ended up being about 11 grains of FFG on my lee scale, not by volume. Recoil was light.

Thanks for the input guys, not so sure now why I was so worried about the outcome.
