floritucky September 28, 2012, 01:08 PM While i plan on carrying maybe a 1911 on my hip. Im. At a desk sitting most of they day. Was looking at carrying around 2 o'clock or so. Looking at the smart carry some. While i dont think i can do a full size 1911. In thinking a snub or short barrel revolver or an lcp for the desk job. But i got a gut that i fear will get in the way while sitting. Working on losing it. But until then.... anyone else carry like that while at a desk with a gut? If so any tips? Seems like it would be near impossible to draw. But im sure someone has it figured out.

KansasSasquatch September 28, 2012, 01:16 PM You could try carrying something along the lines of an LCP. There's some decent holsters that clip to your pocket that are shaped to look like a wallet.
Cosmoline September 28, 2012, 01:20 PM I find that belt carry is simply too awkward to conceal properly in a modern office environment. Needing a cover jacket all the time is a real problem for many because you end up looking too formal. The weight issue is also there, to be sure. And even for the skinny, there's the weight of the iron on a thin dress belt that transfers right to the lower back.
Personally the methods that work best for my tubby self are the Null/Seventrees style deep concealment or thunderwear believe it or not. If you use suspenders in particular the thunderwear is great.
X-Rap September 28, 2012, 01:31 PM I use the tee shirts with the holster sewn in, they are expensive and I only have a couple but I don't live in the office desk envionment so I don't need one every day.
The company I buy mine from offers the belly band free with the purchase of the shirt and it conceals a compact auto or small frame revolver pretty well under a dress shirt.
I wouldn't recomend the band for any vigorious activity but for casual dress in the office it's probably fine.
I can't stand wear things under my pants and can't get over the gun stashed in the groin, when/if I get trimmed down enough I want to try apendix carry but I still have a few lbs. to go.
TAKtical September 28, 2012, 01:43 PM Shoulder holster might be more practical.
TX1911fan September 28, 2012, 02:43 PM IWB at 4 or 5 o'clock. Or LCP in the back pocket.
351 WINCHESTER September 28, 2012, 03:23 PM Pocket or ankle carry. LCP or kel tec p32.
230RN September 28, 2012, 05:50 PM Try crossdraw. Might take some getting used to in deploying it, but once you are, it seems to work. At least for me. With my longish gangly arms, I always found it elbow-and-wrist-bendingly awkward to draw from my strong side. And you can sit in a chair better.
Also works better in a car with the safety belt covering the gun even worse on your right side than the left side.
I know some gun gurus object to crossdraw on sometimes purely "religious" grounds, but it works for me. It worked for Evans Carlson, too:

I don't know, but the closer a carry system gets to "Noon" the less I like it, so I wouldn't persist with the two o'clock carry you mentioned. But that's just me. "Noon." Ahem. You know what I mean.

dprice3844444 September 28, 2012, 05:58 PM it also depends if the chairs have arms that will snag the 1911 getting in or out. nrastore.org. there are shirts/jackets/vests with built in holsters for concealed carry.
there is also the belt thing that crries the gun/mags on top of your junk.

stumpers September 28, 2012, 06:10 PM With a gut and a G19, appendix carry was the WORST for me. And that was with a pudgy gut at 25% body fat, not quite into the morbidly obese range with severe belly overhang.
For example, at 6'2" 235lbs and a 43 inch waist, appendix didn't work with anything - LCP, 642, G26, you name it. It was painful to sit with the grip digging into me, and my belly interfered too much with obtaining a firing a grip to be effective for me.
But now at 205lbs and 37.5 inches, it's my every day carry method for my G19 and keeps getting more comfortable as I get smaller waisted. Easier to grip, comfortable to sit. For me and my general body type, nothing beats the conceal-ability of carrying at 2 o'clock.
With a bigger belly, small of the back or 4 o'clock was the best for me...and concealed enough with the right shirts - but I had to be aware my shirts rising up when I would bend over in public to reach or grab things.
Frank Ettin September 28, 2012, 08:36 PM I'm fat and belt carry works fine for me. The trick is buying one's trousers that right size.

Personally I'd go with the last one and get the left handed draw but wear it in my right front pocket. Doing that you would start the draw with your thumb and half way out wrap the rest of your hand around the grip. Should work for you if you're right handed. I've personally never been able to tolerate sittin on my wallet, I don't imagine sitting on a gun would be anymore comfortable.
X-Rap September 29, 2012, 12:47 AM I may be confused but I interpreted the OP to be wanting concealment in the office setting, If he is only concerned with comfort I say get a good belt and OWB at 3-4 o'clock.
Frank Ettin September 29, 2012, 12:54 AM I handle concealment with a light cover garment -- a jacket, vest or open shirt.
X-Rap September 29, 2012, 01:01 AM I've gone to the unbuttoned shirt now in the summer, I still carry my 380 in my pocket but having a "full sized caliber" eases my mind more every day.
jackblack86 September 29, 2012, 07:38 AM Pocket or ankle carry. LCP or kel tec p32.
I am a big guy the 2 ways I have carried at work are a p32 in right rear pocket or 380 bodyguard iwb at 3 oclock
vossman September 30, 2012, 05:17 AM M&P 40C or 40 Shield IWB at 3 or 4 o'clock has worked for me. Need a minor adjustment when you first sit but after that ur good to go
DocRx September 30, 2012, 08:08 AM Might try crossdraw at 9:15-9:30 (if right handed). Neck and shoulder problems prevent me to comfortably draw from the strong side, although 2:30 isn't too bad. I gave crossdraw and good try and really like it now, especially while seated or driving. I use a OWB strong side holster, Mitch Rosen Pancake, holds close to body and in good position for draw, and covers easily with a t-shirt or open/closed button-up. Just a thought.
larryh1108 September 30, 2012, 08:36 AM I carry an LCP in a wallet holster, right rear pocket. Many say they hate sitting on their wallets. I find the "wallet" is not under you but rather behind you since it rides up a bit when you sit. Unless you wear your pants gangsta style, they wallet is not under your rear end. If you wear Dockers or khakis, the pocket is a pouch inside your pants and floats and moves up when you sit.

Mr.510 September 30, 2012, 08:02 PM IWB between 4 and 5 O'clock works really well for me. If you use a holster like my Comp-Tac MTAC with the long standard belt clips and adjust for maximum forward cant the gun will likely disappear under a regular shirt even when you're seated. It does for me with an XD45C. I used to have quite a belly and I also used to sit at a desk most of the day and this setup worked really well. I've since become self employed, no longer drive a desk, and lost about 40 pounds over the last two years. The MTAC works great working in my fab shop though I've had to downsize my belt and clothes as I've shrunk. :D
One other little 'trick' that can help if you do print a bit while seated with an IWB is to hang a sweatshirt over the back of your chair and lean back against it. This works especially well if your chair's arms are attached to the back.
colorado_handgunner September 30, 2012, 08:16 PM Need to drop some weight myself and understand the delima. I found for me a 38 snub in my front pocket works best. I had to buy some new pants with deep pockets, but for khakis and cargos it works. Jeans, not so much.

Doc3402 October 1, 2012, 08:14 AM Think cross draw and go from there. It's much easier to draw when seated.
Stevie-Ray October 1, 2012, 08:09 PM I carry exactly as Frank Ettin does. Cover it with t-shirt in summer and coat in winter. 3" 1911, though.
230RN October 1, 2012, 10:14 PM Hawaiian shirts work well, too. I had been noticing more and more of them around Denver before I retired. I carried my 1911 IWB crossdraw with no problems that way when the weather got real hot.

floydster October 2, 2012, 01:19 PM I am a porker and I carry like Frank does, my EMP in a Speed Draw holster, the best I have found yet--can't do IWB.
Smokeyloads
jogar80 October 3, 2012, 11:15 AM Galco KingTuk or a Crossbreed holster... both IWB tuckables. Wear it at 4 o'clock. This is what I do and it plain works. I've got quite a gut with matching love handles, and this system made all the problems go away. I carry a full size 1911 in office clothes with no need for a coat of any sort, gun is completely invisible and comfortable to wear, easily accessible.
Frosty Z06 October 3, 2012, 07:53 PM I carry a full sized Springfield 1911 all day everyday with 2 spare single stack mags.
I chose an IWB Milt Sparks VM2 in Horsehide and Sharkskin with a matching belt.
I've carried all day every day for 10 years and it still looks like it's brand new!
Worth every penny I ever spent on it. I've got a bit of a belly and have had it for years. The slimness of the 1911 in the IWB is extremely comfortable and is not noticeable at all.
jhco October 3, 2012, 08:13 PM Frank, what kind of leather are you wearing in the pictures above? It looks comfortable for an owb.
Frank Ettin October 3, 2012, 08:38 PM Frank, what kind of leather are you wearing in the pictures above? It looks comfortable for an owb. In the top photo, it's from Bulman. I'm not sure of the model, but it's based on the Bruce Nelson Avenger design.
In the bottom photo, I'm wearing a Milt Sparks Axiom.
Both are quite comfortable. And most of the time I carry (which I do whenever I legally can), I wear a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2.
jhco October 3, 2012, 08:41 PM I thank you, I will give both of those a look.
doc2rn October 3, 2012, 09:56 PM Yeah, I carry my mini-mag in my pocket.....
