i am a new gunsmith. i did a cleaning job on an FEG P9R. put back together and gave it a safety check, all works. gave it a few dry fires to double check. and the hammer catches in the half cock position not falling completely. it does not do it every time just about every 3rd or 4th time in DA. it does however do it everytime after engaging and disengaging the safety. i have spent hours trying to diagnose the problem, called up a experienced gunsmith buddy who doesnt have a clue. any ideas on what to check, or whats wrong. i cant seem to find info on the p9r anywhere thats of use to me. the internals are very similar to the s&w 59 but not identical.

All I can tell you is the safety on the p9r is a source of frustration. My p9r will occasionally disable the double action mode if the trigger is pulled while the safety is on. Pulling the hammer back manually fixes this issue. I did get some weird hammer actions when I reassembled my p9r the first time. When you take the grips off there is a pin through the frame just below the hammer on the far back of the gun. There is a spring that should be captured behind this pin. If it is not it will do all kinds of wacky things. Sorry I am going off memory as my father has my P9r a the moment I cannot pull it apart to see. I do have an exploded diagram around somewhere, and I will try to find and post it for you.

thanks for the help yes i do have that spring back in there. i at first thought that i had it in wrong but i best i can tell there is only one possible way. i have disassembled and reassembled the gun several times to make sure everything was in alignment and best i can tell it is. i'm at a total loss i have never encountered something like this. nothing appears to be broken or bent. everything cycles properly except the hammer stops in the half cock position and don't fall completely on the firing pin. where i live there are no real gunsmiths except one and he doesn't know he said he's never had that problem and he won't be able to look at it for a while. thanks for the diagrams. i did find them on the net. but they seem to be the only ones, or anything useful i can find on this gun.

All I will say is that a hammer falling to the half cock notch is almost always the result of too light a trigger pull. The pull has to be heavy enough so that the finger will disengage the sear and keep it out of engagement as the hammer falls.
