Spyderco "ring" confusion

I bought a Spyderco Moran today and it came with a small plastic ring in a cardboard sleeve. The ring is split on one side and has a lip on the other with the Spyder. What is this for?

They put the on the points of their fixed blades to help make them safer to ship.
