Hello, I was hoping someone could answer the following question; I have an m7 bayonet, and am wondering what the metal wire at the top of the sheath is for. I have seen these on many knife and a few pistol holsters, and have never known the reason for it. Thanks in advance anyone who know.

For attaching to the web belt which has holes for attaching the pistol holster, magazine pouch, bayonet scabbard, first aid kit, canteen or anything else the Army wants its troops to carry around. (If the soldier can't move with all that stuff hung on him that is his problem, not the Army's.)

The double-hook wire hanger dates all the way back to the Army's M1910 web equipment. It's now obsolete (the current M9 bayonet sheath uses a "Bianchi" style clip).
