Deer Camp Guns.What are you seeing

this is not a pole, I'm sure guns in cal's X,Y,&Z, will alway be the most common , but with all the guns out there chambered in something other that the X,Y,&Z, I'd bet the top cal. would still only be at 10% of what we realy see at DEER CAMP,

if you don't have a deer camp ,then what do you and family hunt with on your land , or if you hunt alone , what guns are your co-workers hunting with (break room talk) ect ...

what got me thinking of this ,was another thred someone told the OP to get cal.X because you will fine one in every deer camp , and I couldn't think of seeing one in many years , a few years back if you wanted to have the most common gun in are hunting party , you would have had to have a 32win.spl, or a 7mm-08 no X,Y,&Z there,

if you have some pics of old od-ball deer-camp guns lets see them, I love it when someone shows up with an old 444marlin slids them long cases in and say lets go hunting!!

My cousin, two uncles, uncles buddy, and my best friend all use 30-06. The older guys all have rem 700's, cousin a rem 742 (i think) woodsmaster and my friend a new stainless m70 featherweight. Im using my new Kimber Montana 338 federal this year as opposed to 30-06 like most previous years.

I see mostly 30-06, .308, .270 and 7mm Mag. One guy always hunts with a 25-06 and one with a .243 WSSM, and all the other cartridges are similar, just the odd hunter using them.

In our group: a Remington Model 7 in 7-08, a Ruger 77 in 25-06, a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06, and a Remington auto in 30-06.

I'm going way back to start , , my first hunting camp, and we did camp, in no mans land, I was 16 , Gramp took me ,I use his 35rem pump mod 141 , Gramps used his 300H&H mag. win 70, my cousin had a 30/30 win. lever gun, my uncle had a 300win mag, remington bolt gun ,and one of gramps friends had a 300 weatherby I still remember them those old guys , holding there cases , "mines bigger , no mine is!" lol too funny ! none were real gun guys , they just got what was hot at the time,:)

30-30 x2, 270 x1, 280 x1, 243 x2, 308 x1, and a 300 Savage

Both 30-30s are Winchesters. The 270 is a Sako. The 280 is a Rem 700 BDL(mine). The 243s are a Rem 700 and a Rossi(my daughter's trifecta), the 300 Savage is a Savage 99, and the 308 is my bad weather gun - an Armalite AR-10

Typically Winchester '94 .30-30s, Marlin .30-30s, and assorted .30-06s and .270s.

If I get out this year it will be with a new (to me) Winchester '94 (.30-30) or a .444 Marlin bolt gun.....also new to me.....and I love it (except for the price of ammo :uhoh:)

I also just got a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .243 that will be a great deer rifle.

I am in a deer club of 30 members that leases about 2500 acres and you see a wide range of rifles. Most are traditional calibers, from 233 & 30-30 up to 7 Mag and 300 Win Mag. But the most common rifle seems to be a bolt action 243. I use a Marlin 336 in 30-30 or 35 Rem. The 233 users are guys with AR's. The ones with 300 Win Mags are typically hoping for bang-flops that require zero blood trailing.

Oh, gotcha. No harm no foul!

PCCs are usually used under strict agreement that no shots be taken outside of 75 yards with either caliber I listed. No wounded deer thus far, and proper bullets and placement are being used. The 9mm works surprisingly well. The .45 tends to tear up a little meat, especially with shots too close to the shoulder. That slow, heavy bullet does a number.

That's what I'm using, along with a S-R K31!

Most go with 30-06, one loves his .300 WM and I have my .300 WSM. This is for deer, elk and moose. My friend with the .300 WM just bagged a large bull moose yesterday. He still has elk and deer left on his tags. Looks like it should be a good year.

My deer camp is my living room, with the hunting area fifty yards walk from the back door. Deer camp gun will be a Ruger Number 1 in .308 Winchester mostly this year. But I do plan on sliding in the long cartridges of the .444 Marlin this year as well.

Gotta love that Marlin .444. My favorite all time rifle.:D

.45-70, .35 Whelen

Growing up, it was rare that anyone carried anything other than -06, .270, .308, and 30-30. My dad had a 760 in 257 Roberts. I had a friend with an old lever gun in 35 Remington.

We hunt the high alpine basins in the Sierra's. In our camp was:

I have to admit that I love the 06. It shoots plenty flat enough for our area and simply drops deer in their tracks. We use 165 Sierra GameKings.

OP here , I didn't mean they had to 100 years old , newer or older is just fine , with all the new wizz-bang stuff out there is good to remember the old guns still work , where I have been hunting for the last 18 years there are a lot of old family farms with a lot of handed down guns , most don't have piles of guns like me , they hunt with what they got ,like in my first post , two 32win spl's , how often do you even see one !,
I see a few 25-06's listed , always wanted one , but can't say I have every seen one at camp, maybe some day at mine !

1x M77 in .270, 1x Rem 700 in 30-06, 1x Mini-14 in .223, 1x BLR in 243.... not to sure about the others, they tend to hang out and socialize more than hunt, so I rarely see their rifles. I am trying to bring some weirdness to the club this year by using 6.8 spc, 9.3x62 and 10mm.

I have no hunting camp. I live in a secluded valley in the Selkirk mountains of N. Idaho and the only high fence is the one I built to keep the deer, elk and moose out of the vegetable garden.

The I'm the only one who rotates guns. In the past I've used Marlin 336 RC30-30, S&W 1500 .300WM, and Husquvarna .270.

We have a pretty good variety of calibers at my camp.
Everything from shotguns on up.
I know for a fact there are several .30-06s, a .270 and .308 or two. You see the occasional open sighted .30-30 as well. There are also the crowd that shoots the magnums, nothing wrong with that. I know there are a couple of .300 WSMs and one 7mm STW that is a GORGEOUS rifle custom built on a Rem 700 action with a sweet thumbhole stock, stainless fluted barrel with muzzle break, and a Burris Eliminator scope. I'm not a big fan of the scope but it's pretty amazing.

When I first started deer hunting in 1962, the club (a few thousand acres in the Adirondacks) was pretty much M94's in 30-30, Savage 99's in .303, .300, and one .250-3000 Savage, and a couple of .30-06's. My first year, I hunted a 6.5x55 Swede. By 1965, I had gone to my HS graduation gift from Dad, a Rem 760 in .270; there was also a 760 in .35 Rem at that time. By the late '60's, there was an influx of various .308 bolt rifles. By the late 70's and early 80's, most of the rifles had become bolt actions in .308 and a few other calibers. My Dad never changed out from his Remington Model 14 in .30 Rem, and he never fired without bringing home meat.

In 1978 a friend of mine arrived with a Model 70 in .458, and in 1981 another buddy I invited came with a Win. '86 in 45-70 that he'd bought from Warren Page's estate. He had a shot at a buck the first day in. It was coming down a little draw, with a young spike behind. Just as he fired, the little buck moved up, and he killed them both with the one shot. The little guy didn't have legal horns, so it was and embarassing moment for my friend!

Usuaully its just me and a few friends hanging out in Western Marylands state park, pretty much the same every year.

Our camp, In the Adirondack mountains where deer over 200 lbs. are common, guns run from semi-auto .308's. Win. Mod 88's in .308, Browning A-bolts in .308 a Marlin 45-70 one 300 WSM. There are only 2 of us who handload I go between a 7mm08, a .280, 35 Whelen and when trapping a contender carbine in .35 Rem.

never been to a hunting camp, but my co worker and i hunt with the exact same gun, mossberg 500 slug gun, with the rifled barrel. he sports a nikon 3-9 scope, and hornady slugs, i sport a 2.5 fixed power simmons, and hornady slugs.

I can;t say I visited a camp, but my buds will be hunting their area with two 30-06, one 7mm Magnum, and one 270.

I'll be taking a Ruger #1 in 25-06 and a Savage 99 in 300 Savage, depending on what I feel like that morning.

I haven't been to a deer camp in a while but when a friend & I zeroed our rifles the other day I was shooting my post 64 model 70 in .30-06. He was shooting a Mosin Nagant 91/30 in 7.62 x 54R (he had to sell the .270 savage he had last year due to financial problems so he fell back on the Mosin). The neighbor I have hunted with sometimes has a model 70 (I think it is a classic but not sure) in 7mm mag. Back when I was in a hunting club in the 90's probably half the guys in the club used Reminton 742's in .30-06. There was one older guy that liked leverguns & one guy that used something different every year. One year his was a Remington pumpgun in .35 Remington the next a 7mm Mag model 70. My old hunting partner had a Browning Semi-Auto in .270. I always find the variety of calibers & action types folks hunt with interesting.

yep there are a lot of them out there,, thats why I thought it was odd ,I have a 308win too just some years I didn't see any and mine stayed home too,

Whinny 94 30-30, Rossi 308, Marlin stainless 30-30, Marlin blued 30-30, Savage 270. I thought about takeing my Mosin M44, but that is just to much weight. Now the gun that stays in the camp behind the front door usually is 30-06 for the long field that is infront of the cabin. Ive been kicking around the idea of a 444 marlin, just for a shoulder realignment.

This is at my buddies FIL in east Texas. All rounds have taken many deer successfully.

It's just hard to beat the 30 30 for deer.But if I think I will get a shot over 200 yards than my 30 06 is coming out 451 yards last year just a doe but great shot for me anyways about 3 to 3.5 foot drop

No deer camp, we just show up at a relative's place or meet up in the woods. Depending on where we are really determines which calibers show up, i don't take a 30-30 to eastern MT where a 200-300+ yd shot is the norm and anything less than 100 is lucky.

If you were to come around the people I hunt with, you would see a lot of Winchester, Remington, and Ruger bolt actions mostly in .270, some in .30-06, and a few in .243. Until I show up with my Stevens .308, Mauser 8mm, and my PSL in 7.62X54R.

I hunt with my two brothers and a cousin. They use bolt actions in 30/06 and I use a 6.5x55, though I'll switch to a 12 ga slug gun on drives.

In our family of hunters, most own many guns and over the years there's been LOT'S of switching around of guns and cartridges for deer. BUT, most come back to a 30-06 and some have never left it...

The biggest buck ever taken in our family was taken last year with an 8x57jrs.

MANY other big bucks have been taken too, mostly with 30-06's.

I consider the 30-06 to be the greatest cartridge ever designed, but for deer, i like the 280 Remington. I haven't hunted with either for some time though.

Interesting thread. No real camp for us -we hunt pretty close to home. We were hunting mostly 7000-10000' open country this year and the folks I hunted with throughout the season hunted with a Model 70 in 25-06, a BAR Safari in .308, a Model 70 in .270 WSM, a Savage 99 in .300 Savage, and I used a sporterized 98 Mauser in .30-06. All were scoped.

When I'm hunting lower, thicker country I mostly use a Model 94 .356 Winchester with a 2x7 Leupold or Grandpa's Model 8 in .35 Remington with a full buckhorn sight.

Many of the other guys in my family use 270 win remington 700s and browning x bolt as examples
and my grandad uses a 270 wsm browning a bolt

Also a few more 30-06 but 270 is the most common caliber.

OP here , I was just on a thred , talking about 6.8 for deer , and I see no one listed one on here ,so I thought I would try to get this started again , , and now that deer camp is done for most of us , , what did you see this year at deer camp ?

I did wind up taking my 6.8 PSA AR out hunting this year, and got two does with that. Also shot a doe and a hog with a 30-06 x-bolt. The G20 did not make it out for deer this year, but will hopefully make an appearance on pig this spring.

I didn't get out much as I wanted to this year but I was surprised at seeing more lever guns (in Vt) than I have in years. All kinds. My favorites were a young guy shooting moose with his grandfather. Grandpa had a beat Marlin Guide Gun and the kid had one of the most gorgeous stocked BLRs I've ever seen. It was a 300 win mag which is a lot more rifle than we normally see. The other was a friend of a friend visiting from Maine who had the most pristine Savage 99 in 300 Savage - straight grip and a schnabel forend (Saxon pig has one as well) with some of the richest bluing I've seen on a rifle. Also saw a really nice 38-55 High Wall that I really liked.

In New York we're in shotgun country down south. Lots of very elaborate slug guns!

We've got 7k acres here and the camps broken up into three places with a total of 28 hunters. I only know about half of them and what they shoot.

-all pistol calibers are for secondary arms. Shooting with a pistol is "just crazy." Although the 460 and 44 have both been primary deer calibers for me in the past.

Shots here in south Tx can be quite far so it's rare to see someone hunting with calibers than can limit the range. If so, it's usually a truck gun kind of thing. I shoot the 270 wthby and half the people think it's a normal 270. So not really very many "gun" people there.

And I think that's about it. I've never hunted with someone who shot a 308. Almost all the people think any belted magnum is super overkill. The vast majority think 223 is adequate for pigs and deer up to 100 yards.

Here is an oldie I have used for deer. Yes, it is a frankentrapdoor but it still works and works well. It started out as a Model 1866 but somewhere along it's life it was shortened and then lost it's wood and other parts. When I got it, it was just the barreled action. I found an Italian replica of the 1841 Mississippi rifle with a crappy barrel and using some chisels, bedding compound and a bit of work, I was able to merge the two together. The action was built in 1866 for the 50 Gov't cartridge. The barrel was built circa 1861-2 for one of the Springfield 58 caliber muskets. The more I use the 50, the less use I have for the 45-70.

Others I have hunted with also use older arms, the 1873 Springfield (45-70) is commonly found but some of the newer rifles include the various Krags and even the 1903 Springfield has made an appearence.

I hunt with 2 other friends and their wives. all of us use a Ruger #1, women use .22-250, guys use .308, .270, 30-06. other riflesf I see are Remington 700s and I always take mine in .308. Ruger M77s in various calibers. all of us carry Ruger revolvers in at least .357 magnum cause we are overrun with snakes and hogs.

Me : I switch back and forth between a Ruger No. 1 in .270 Win and a Stag Arms in 6.8 SPC.

Depends on the zone, but either a 870 Express/357 GP100 (I don't know how to put down a deer at close range with a 12 ga and *not* make a big mess), otherwise CZ 550 .243.

Others I hunt with are using either a shotgun, or a Ruger 77 variant in .270 or .30-06. Plus one or two oddballs with a 1873 in .45 Colt. :)

I saw a few Savage 99's, a Remington 7600 and a Winchester 94. I brought a Stevens 200 and a Sig PE90.

I've hunted with or been with people hunting with:

Bunches of .270 and .243

Also here and there a 30-06, .300 win mag, .222, .223, 30-30, 25-35, 45-70, 7mm rem mag, .257 roberts, 25-06, .303 british, .300 savage

And one oddball guy on a south Texas whitetail lease who used a 30-06 because he liked the "knock down power" over the "wimpy" .243 his son was using. (He was trying to convince his son to go heavier in caliber.) Then, it turns out dad shot managed recoil rounds with something like 125-grain bullets at around 2660 fps. Practically, it was not as good a deer rifle in those conditions as a .243. On top of that, he still used one of those shirts with the padded shoulder. (Nothing wrong with using any of that stuff, but calling his son wimpy for shooting his .243???)

Rarest of all: Grandaddy's 38-40 and 40-82 from the octagon barrel days. BTW, I was not alive to see him hunt with either of those. In my day, he used 25-06 or .300 win mag, depending on the location.

.308, 30-06 and a 300 WinMag pretty well cover the calibers. Guns used vary from semi auto and pumps to bolt action with all of them being scoped.

I have a custom AR15, Marlin 336 in 35rem, Rem 700 BDL in 260rem, and I also hunt with my Ruger Blackhawk in 357mag. The wife has a Rem 7 in 257 roberts. The boy hunts with his Mossberg 920 20g or the AR.

In our camp in Pa. theres a .32WCF, 2- 30/30's 2- 30/06's and a 45/70!
Here at home in Texas faster flatter chamberings are more the norm. 7mm Rem Mag, .270, 30/06, 300 Win Mag and my favorite the 7mm/08!

Myself, father, and uncle all used Remington 700 BDLs in 30-06, 30-06, and 7mm mag. Took many deer and an elk with those 30-06 guns

5 guns on my lease. 3 guys shoot .270's exclusively. One shoots a 7mag. Then there's me. I generally tote one of three .30-30's for does, culls and pigs, but when the seasons only trophy is my quarry and I'm parked in my most distant tower chair, I use a .308.

Our place has 1-32 w.s. , 2-243's , 2-30-06's , and 2 - 7mm mauser no.1 Rugers

When I hunt with a club they usually have at least 30 members. This is NC. We use dogs to hunt deer. When we are all tight in an area we use shotguns and buckshot. When we are not ganged up to be in position to catch the dogs hunters use almost any gun from shotgun slugs to 300 mag. No one heads out for the day with just one gun. I carry a Maverick 88 loaded with buckshot, A Mossberg 500 slug gun, a 30/06 BAR and a Ruger Blackhawk 357. I use the gun that suits the situation since I move several times a day. Even if you hunt alone there is no magic bullet. You need a gun for every situation.

My deer camp is my living room, with the hunting area fifty yards walk from the back door. Deer camp gun will be a Ruger Number 1 in .308 Winchester mostly this year. But I do plan on sliding in the long cartridges of the .444 Marlin this year as well.

I used a Howa 1500 chambered for 30-06, my brother toted an old, cheap, Remington 710 in .270, a couple of family friends brought Ruger Americans, one in .308, another in .243. One of their friends brought a .243 Remington 770. I guess you can say economy bolt guns rule this neck of the woods. I hung up the old, trusty Marlin 336, but miss it already. Perfect woods gun IMHO. Very lackluster, but these cheap rifles, work for, "once a year" deer rifles. They all were zeroed before hunting, and all shot slightly more than MOA. Including my Howa. The 710, being probably least accurate at 1.5-1.75 (rough estimate off of memory for what that's worth). This year is the the year of the 45-70, for me if all goes as planned.

Get you a Mosin 91/59 , that thing is simple and rugged. Hits with the power equivalent to 3006

I'm a one man deer camp so the only rifle is a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 with a Redfield 3-9, but the people I pig hunt with use either a Winchester 70 FW .30-06 with a 6-18 Leupold (too much scope IMHO) or a Ruger Mk II 7mm Rem Mag with a 3-9 Burris.

30-30 rules the roost in our camp. I think the biggest reason is they are carried every day in our trucks. An occasional 270, 25-06 shows up. A 300 mag showed up 1 year. Must have heard 1,000 times, we ain't hunting moose.

Last season, my Uncle's M70 claimed two does- both good eating size- and my Mosin claimed a medium-sized doe and an 8 point buck, plus a nine pointer from the season before. My first deer- a nubbin buck- was claimed with the BAR featherweight.

Several deer have been claimed by the .54 Great Plains rifle over the years, and my Aunt rose pulled off one heck of a shot a few years back when she put a .30 Carbine round right through a doe's skull from 50 plus yards away....talk about a headache... :what:

Definitely. Personally, I've had no problems using mine for deer- Barnaul 203 grain soft points are strong medicine for white tails. I've never had them travel more than a few yards before dropping when I do my part. But then again, the deer here in WI are BIG critters. The Mosin is an underestimated option as a hunting rifle, especially box-stock, in my opinion. You won't regret taking your Mosin along, I assure you.

Agree on most points. I've owned many mosins over the years including an nice SAKO M39. Even my Mossy ATR is a huge leap forward, for a hunting rifle anyway.

Well, Kachok, beauty in the eye of the beholder, eh? :) Granted, I've done quite a bit of work on my Mosin in terms of the trigger and bolt operation. I've also refinished the stock, and to be honest, as a guy with a short LOP, I actually don't mind the stock design. When I have all of my hunting gear on, it's even better. I also had the fortune to get a Mosin with a near-pristine bore (and in a 91/30, too...can't believe my luck) so it shoots anything heavier than 160 grains into 1.5 MOA- I once got 4 shots under a quarter at 50 yards, which is the average hunting range in my kneck of the woods. Granted, I've also taken the time to sight it in and find the best loads for it which- in my experience- makes, or breaks, any Mosin- nice bore or not.

The problem is, I'm broke as old kindling and couldn't even afford a plastic Remington excuse-for-a-bolt-gun (like the 770) at this stage. Being a college student in this day and age does that. ;) For that matter, I prefer my Mosin simply because I know that it is physically impossible for it to fail me; and where other guns fall victim to the weather here in WI during deer season- and I have seen it, trust me- the Mosin is just coming into its stride. I would trust the gun with my life, and I know that- with practice- anything out to 200 yards should fear for its well-being, and I only impose that limitation because it's the farthest I know I can shoot with repeatable ethical shots- not because the gun isn't up to the task. And while I have access to other guns that are far more 'refined,' I keep coming back to my Mosin.

Maybe I just have simple tastes, I don't know. But I know this- this gun has taken 3 deer in my hands in half as many years, and being 20, I have quite a few more years in front of me; I haven't yet missed any shot I applied myself to, and the Mosin has brought meat home every time. Hopefully, if I have children, it will continue to do so for them.

But, to each their own. I just personally feel that- in my experience and through the vetting of my individual gun- the Mosin's positive points far outweigh its negatives. For me, the gun just 'fits.' :)

^ LOL yeah even as a non-Mosin guy I would opt for the Ruskie rifle over a 770. Yeah they are both really rough around the edges, and less then super accurate but at leased the Mosin has some class and history to it the 770 is just a turd! I picked one up once and immediately went to wash the 770 off my hands :D
Never got a Mosin to do any better then about 2" at 100yd my five bolt actions all shoot under 3/4" easily, and three of them will give me one hole groups/cloverleafs with their pet loads when I do my part. But to be completely fair I will say that I do not handload 7.62x54R if I did I might have a totally different view of the Mosin's accuracy, I already have a 30-06 and a 308 no need for a 7.62x54 it would be really redundant.
One day when I have a little extra cash laying around I might just grab a Mosin and give it the same accuracy treatment that I give my other rifles and see what it will do, I am sure I can top the performance of mil-surp ammo just not sure by how much. I would have to do something with the stock though that is one horribly uncomfortable rifle to shoot compared to my Savages, Winchester, Browning and Tikka, and yes I have a short LOP too (5'6")

Over 40 years with several hunting buddies..243 Win. model 70(its mine now),257 Roberts,35 Rem. pump,250-3000 Savage from the 1920's which killed a 7 point buck in 2004.They all took deer.My first deer rifle was a Marlin 336 in 30-30.

It would not be a 110 in 308 but rather a 10 or 11, all Savage short actions are two digit all long actions are three. I don't have the 11 in 308 but I do have two Savages a 110 in 30-06 and an 11 in 270 WSM both are great. My 308 is a new (FN) Winchester 70 Featherweight.
Refinement is more then just looks, a smoother action will cycle faster/more reliably if a follow up shot is needed, a lighter more compact rifle is easier to carry in the brush, and a better trigger is always nice on those long shots. Try raising up a 4 foot long Mosin in a small shooting house without bumping anything and you will see what I mean :D

Sorry but to impress me with a Mosin you would have to blueprint the action, I have shot too many of them with sticky bolts.

Overall most popular are the Remington pump guns in 30-06. But there are always a couple 30-30 carbines in camp.

It came chopped and beat up prebubbaed for $25.00, I then scouted to final configuration.

Have three M39 Finns, (two like new) but this 1937 Tula is hands down favorite.

Savage did not make a short action intell the late 1990's my 7mm-08 mod 16 was the 2nd year they made short actions, so there are 1000's of 110's in 308 out there ,

Deer hunting for use is a deep rooted tradition. and a bigger holiday than Christmas or New Years. Its a big neighborhood reunion. All the family comes whether they hunt or not. Our deer camp is a 40 X 56 foot pole shed that most of the year serves as our equipment shed. But during deer season it becomes the focal gathering point for deer season. There are 3 neighboring farms and the families have hunted together since before deer seasons started Our great grand fathers started to hunt together and now 5 generations later we still are hunting together. between the 3 farms we have in excess of 12,000 acres to hunt. Quality Deer Management is practiced now going on 9 years and we are seeing some excellent results.

We are pretty well sold on Winchesters and 270 calibers. For back up guns there are a couple old 1984's win in 30WCF and Model 95 win in 30-06. But they are seldom used. If they are used its usually because its a novelty. The real fun comes after season is over and we cut up the deer and make sausage. That gets to be a fun time

he Mosin is an underestimated option as a hunting rifle, especially box-stock, in my opinion. You won't regret taking your Mosin along, I assure you.


The only reason I don't use mine is because of the safety. It's hard to manipulate quietly. The rifles I've used over the years are Winchester 94, Marlin 336, Savage 99, and a Rossi 92 in 357.
