I just recently purchased a new (used ) Ruger P95 mag in what I assumed was 9mm only to realize a couple weeks later that it was stamped .40 cal. This mag fits perfectly in my 9 and not only does it hold the rounds ok it also feeds and ejects them perfectly. I have not fired my Ruger yet with this mag and was just wandering CAN I ?

As long as the 9mm shells go into battery, it won't blow up your gun, but you probably will have feeding problems. That slide moves alot faster when the gun is fired then you can pull it.

I wouldn't count on relying on it for a self defense weopon.

You need to buy the right mag for it.

No, the slide will fly off the back and put your eye out.

Seriously though, no problem. I used my 40 mags to shoot both 40 and 9mm in my Steyr pistol with a conversion slide- barrel. If the 9mm rds don't hold just pinch the mags lips in slightly with a vice or pliers. I've shot 9mm in my Glock 19 using my Glock 23 40 cal mags as well with no mods to the mag lips.

Prolly best to use the right mags when carrying a self defense pistol though.

Are you sure it is a P95 mag? I don't believe the P95 was ever chambered in .40S&W.

When the stupid ban was on lots of us used 40 clips in 9mm. Gave 2 more rounds and NO malfunctions

I've used 40 cal mags with great success in 9mm Glocks and Beretta's, but would consider them for range use only. While I've never ran into a problem with 2-3 specific guns, I'd rather have the right mags in a gun that I depended on to save my life.

The P95 was never made in .40. Unless there was some freakishly weird models made before they discontinued them in '05. The P94 was chambered 9mm and .40 though. Not many big differences between them.

Back on topic. If you have 9mm snap caps I would recommend trying those to see if they go into battery. And if you have enough see how well they feed when you manually operate the slide.

It won't harm the gun to shoot it with that mag. It is very probable that you will have feeding problems. Even if you get lucky and it does function, I wouldn't recommend you trust your life to it. It could be relegated to "range only," but there is always a possibility of its finding its way back. What is the seller's return or exchange policy?

As long as a 9mm round is retained by the .40 mag and feeds into the chamber properly it should be fine. By the time the round is OUT of the magazine and in the chamber the magazine is no longer in the cycle. If they feed properly, you're probably good to go. Using it for a while will determine whether the mag is RELIABLE in your gun.

In a couple of my guns in the past, I'd notice a slight "clunk" when using a 9mm magazine in a .40 pistol, but not the other way round. The .40 round needs to set a bit higher than is allowed by a 9mm mag's feed lips -- it's a slightly larger diameter round. The "clunk" is probably the larger .40 round hitting the feed ramp less optimally. I didn't like that sound, and decided that .40 rounds in 9mm mags wasn't a good idea.

I've never noticed any problems when using 9mm rounds in a .40 mag. I have a Glock 35 and use a conversion 9mm barrel; when shooting 9mm in that gun, I use the .40 mags without problems.

All Ruger 9mm mags will work in the P85, P89, P93, P94, and P95. The P93 and P94 is also made in .40, and are the same size as the 9mm versions, thus the reason for the mags existance.

The seller had the mag in a zip lock bag and had it marked Ruger P95. The only difference that I noticed later was it being stamped .40 cal. It function just fine at the range yesterday, but I agree it would not be in my gun when carrying for self defence.

I might put an identifying mark on it - e.g., with a paint pen on the floorplate - to identify it as "range only" so it doesn't find its way into the gun for defense.

Good idea, thanks.

It's not uncommon for manufacturers to list two, seemingly identical, magazines in both 9x19 and 40 S&W, but with different part numbers.

Some, like my Astra A75, came with magazines that SAID .40 S&W/9mmP on the magazines.

As was also mentioned, any number of P94, .40 S&W caliber magazines were pressed into service during the 1994 AWB, Your magazine would reliable feed, fire, and eject with 12 rounds in the magazine in 9x19.

Ruger's P90 and P97 use one factory part number, while the P345 uses another. They interchange quite nicely.:)
