"Drawing the ire of the gun lobby, Cook County Board President Preckwinkle is eyeing a violence tax on guns and ammunition sold in the city and suburbs, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.

"Such a tax alone wouldn’t close a $115 million budget gap in 2013, but it could at least funnel money into the county’s $3 billion operation — where roughly two-thirds of the budget pays for both the county’s public health clinics and two hospitals along with the criminal justice system that includes the courts and jail."

But why not just tax the people who use the guns illegally, and thus burden the coursts and hospitals? Wouldn't this be similar to taxing all drivers to pay for the costs imposed by the wreakless few? I guess it would make sense only if you assumed that ALL guns and gun owners are responsible for the violence that is wreaking so many lives in Chicago.

Just heard about it on the news....their calling it the "Violence Tax." Although if it's "Violence Tax" shouldn't they be taxing the people in prison and of course all the gang-members of Chicago? But of course their are those who would say that's prejudice, but of course taxing the law-abiding is perfectly fine.

Thankfully most of the ammo I buy is out of state(much cheaper to begin with), and most of my firearm purchases are online. So it doesn't look like they'll be getting much tax money from me.

Sounds like the usual commie logic that's all over the country. Only the rich and criminals are allowed to own guns.

Violent criminals don't usually buy their guns from locations that would tax them to begin with. Just more liberal bovine excrement.

Chicago leads the nation in bovine excrement
even though it's been years since they closed the stockyards...

If the city is so desperate to raise money, the city should just start issuing carry permits for a fee to anyone who had a clean record. But that would make too much sense.

I wonder if the thugs selling illegal guns are going to collect this tax?
