A proposed new tax in Cook County, Ill., home of violence-plagued Chicago, takes aim at guns, and gun rights activists aren't happy about it.

County President Toni Preckwinkle wants to introduce a "violence tax" on guns and ammunition to help plug a $115 million budget gap in 2013. Under the tax, guns and ammunition would cost more, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, but Preckwinkle isn't saying how much more just yet.

The aim of the proposal is to curb the number of guns in circulation, Preckwinkle's chief of staff, Kurt Summers, told the newspaper. Summers cited a report from last summer showing that nearly one-third of the guns recovered on the Chicago's streets were purchased in suburban gun shops.

If Cook County would pass a "stupid tax" on the members of the city council, they'd raise enough money to run the city for a generation.

Absolute truth but in places like that the truth has little purpose.

Edit: I would like to add that anyone who lives in that area needs to be on the phone today with their representatives.

Another idiot idea from Crook County. When they raised the cigarette tax by $1.00 they lost more revenue than they gained by people just buying cigs outside of Crook. So what did they do? They raised it even higher to $2.00 per pack. Can anyone guess what happened? (LOL). Now they are $115 Million short. They could make that up in no time if the oficials would stop stealing public funds.

Like I said another idiot idea from Crook County.

Cook County is a sewer with nobody in charge who possesses a single functioning brain cell.

I am a little confused. I thought guns (and presumably ammo) were pretty much completely against the law in Cook county. Who would they tax? The criminals who illegally possess them?

So, that's being sponsored by Du Page, Will, Lake and Kendal county gun shops, right? lol

The state of Kentucky leads the nation in gun sales and we have a fraction of the crime Chicago has. Isn't anybody in Chicago able to rationally put these facts together?

If they were, it wouldn't be Chicago.

My Mom and Dad and almost every relative I have live in and around the "Chicagoland" area. I spent a lot of my (non-shooting) life in Chicago. I love the city, but I hate their stupid anti-gun polices.

Cook County: I know how to fight crime, lets charge the law abiding another tax
Law abiding: why are we being charged for being law-abiding?
Criminals: SUCKERS <as they walk away>

Ahh was looking for this. I saw the other thread closed, didn't see this one until just now. :)

The entire basis for this is ridiculous.

Gangbangers don't pay taxes on their illegal drugs. What makes these idiots think they'll pay taxes on guns and ammo?

If you somehow magically erected a wall around all of Cook County that brought down the wrath of God on you when you crossed that line with firearms, firearms aren't going to disappear from Cook County. In fact... all that would happen if you were some how able to prevent guns from being brought in, is you're going to dramatically raise the rate of home invasions by criminals LOOKING for already privately owned guns.

Or, put another way...

They're trying to put out the fire in their back yard by peeing on the neighbor's lawn.

It seems to me if I were looking for a deal on ammo or a gun, my search wouldnt start in Cook County and doubt it would end up there.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

From 1960-65 I took a Millwright apprenticeship in Chicago. The city government was rotten to very core, cops were so corrupt one kept a ten dollar bill paper clipped to drivers license.

And the trend seems to only have gotten worse after near 50 years.

If you want to reduce crime in Crook County, you put the whole Chicago city council including the mayor and all Cook County board members in a federal prison and throw away the keys. Then you could start on all the crooked lawyers and judges and throw in the bankers and stock brokers.

That would reduce crime by about 70%. To stop violent street crime, you arm all the Grandmothers with AR's or AK-47's and authorize them to shoot to kill to protect their kids.

The murder rate would drop to 0 in about 90 days.

Sounds crazy but other methods don't seem to work.

Might not be a bad idea for Gary, IN also.

I have come to the conclusion that NO ONE could be so stupid.

They must derive some perverse pleasure off of driving up the crime rate, and enjoy watching innocent people suffer.

I am not surprised. Has to be one of the most corrupt areas of the country. It reaches all the way to Washington, D.C.

This is just a test run. Look for proposals on a national level. Every gungrabber knows the AWB did not work and another will not be proposed. The fight will move in a different direction and this is a test to see how well it works.

They know it won't raise revenue in Chicago, but if it can pass there they will try to expand it to other areas and eventually nationally. If they cannot ban guns, they will try to make it unaffordable.

From the article:

"The idea is to curb the number of guns in circulation, he said,"

The pro-2A lawyers are going to love that admission.

How's Gramaw on her pension going to afford a box of ammo to defend herself against all the gangs and thugs? Maybe they should give it away to all the poor.

It's just another way to keep the people oppressed while making a buck to suit their wants/needs.

If they have a violence problem, they need more guns.
Meth is illegal, the average Joe doesn't know how to get it, but criminals do. All gun regulation will just turn us all into sitting ducks. Guess you didn't need me to tell you that.

Preckwinkle is just playing to her base, libs who hate guns, love social spending, and have run out of other people's money:what:. I lived in " Crook" I mean Cook county for 40 years, the Dems have spent my tax dollars, my kids, my grand kids, and want Washington to send more money!!! I fled 12 years ago and will never return. They signed a contract to manage the parking meters to a German firm, for 75 years, and have already spent all the money:banghead: and they still get 90% of the vote, Arizona here I come:D

If voter ID = poll tax to the people how can they not see that this is a tax on out civil rights?

Ryanxia

I wouldn't just assume that this will get stopped somewhere, if you live in the area you should be making some phone calls and writing letters to your reps and helping to raise awareness to gunshops and gunowners.

They do see it's a tax on our civil rights. They want to violate the Constitution.
