Night Vision

I've been using NV a LOT past couple of years. Most of my stuff came from frankie @ ASM Group (256-438-4024 call or txt) though I've bought a good bit from almost all of the NV vendors.

Some gratuitous photos to show different types of equipment, set up and useable, not just out of the packaging.

anvis-9s left, "5050s" right - on Ops Core base jump helmets. note batteries in back balance the weight and make it much more comfortable to wear for hours

PVS-14s left, anvis-9s right - 14s also have QD mount for placing behind aimpoint/eotech on pic rail, mounted on the wilcox hardware (awesome stuff)

CNVD-LR left, PVS-27s right

Anyway, the point of my post is that I know that some of this stuff is ridiculously expensive, but thought I would mention that between the economy and something of a price war going on, prices are pretty low. lower than I've ever seen, given the quality. And better yet, there's a lot of used/refurb stuff coming onto the market that is pretty dang decent and bargain priced. I got a couple of the items used and haven't regretted any of them. If you've ever wanted NV, it's a good time to buy. I think I paid $3400 for that PVS14 new and I can get a better one now for $2200.

Great looking equipment.

That is a ridiculous sweet set up... Still in the process of building my set up and I can confirm the 2200 price which is what I paid a couple months ago for a new USNV14 Gen 3. I'll put in a plug for Steve over at USnightvision... Their customer service is superb and i've talked with him for at least 3 hours on the phone over the course of the couple months I've own them. I purchase the unit from one of their vendors Clark arms.

hey modarmory... got a question for you

what do you think about the insight thermal MTM?

November 6, 2012, 07:47 PM
With thermal it depends on what you are looking to accomplish. Generally speaking the price increase is not worth it. (Generally.. what we have gathered from customers looking through units side by side).

Not a fan that with the digital zoom you compromise resolution as well as recalibration with Vox technology.

For higher end hand helds we typically sell more FLIR M18's.

Our top sellers are handheld entry units from L3 - X50 and X200xp. On paper they do not look as impressive as a entry level FLIR but they out preform the unit. Great for spotting to 500 yards; you will see the heat source and then can advance on your target to determine what it is.

Myself, Camille, I have not had extensive experience with the MTM unlike my boss. He could give you a more defined answer but is currently at a competition. I know when we hog or coyote hunt we use the entry level thermals or the Raytheon Weapon Sight and then have night vision mounted on helmets like your set up.

Have you used the MTM or other handheld thermals?

Newbie question: If you are wearing a monocular night vision device, will it work properly when you use it to look through a rifle scope?

Yes, but it can be ridiculously hard to use that way. It works much more reasonably with 1x optics like IR red dots or IR Eotechs.

Those look awesome. Someday I'll pick up some NV.:banghead:

Double Naught Spy - Thanks for the response. What rifle sights are the military using on their M-4s when they're wearing NV?

Several of the bin Laden raiders were using Eotechs and/or IR lasers. Eotechs have the advantage of a large FOV, small (1 moa, IIRC) aiming dot and can be aligned very easily with NV gear for sighting.

My USNV14 lined up perfectly with my Aimpoint Pro with its stock rail mount. I'm not sure how the military chooses between aimpoint and eotech but I've seen both being deployed. NVD's are game changers... and fun as hell
