The 16" barreled receiver on their website branded as AAC. I don't think they have their own production line for uppers so I want to know who makes them. And how they're made, etc.

AAC is part of Freedom Group. Freedom Group owns AAC, Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS, Para, Marlin and a few others. I would bet that Bushmaster or DPMS makes those uppers.

It doesn't work that way. There are legal and financial differences/implications and a different chain of command with Remington owning AAC rather than FGI owning AAC.

That's great and all but I don't want to know who owns them. I want to know who manufactures the upper and how it's built. Thanks.

LOL, FG owns all of them. Regardless, AAC is part of FG. Look at their website. lol.
sorry, i didn't mean to stir the pot.
DPMS makes the .308s for Freedom Group. Even the Bushmaster 308s are a re-branded DPMS. I would put my money on DPMS. Typically the owning company controls who will make its stuff.

Thanks gotigers, should I infer from that, that the uppers are not machined? Or is dpms machining now?

You're not getting accurate information here re who owns AAC or who manufactures AAC uppers so I suggest you call AAC and ask them.

Thanks 1858 I'll do that today.
I'd still be interested to hear from an owner of one as to their thoughts...

Called AAC and they old me they do the assembly in house but wouldn't tell me who actually machines the uppers...should this be a red flag? Or is there some legal precedence I don't know about? It is a machined receiver... So would I be safe to assume that anyone with a mill and the correct specs could manufacture a receiver to the same standards as anyone else?

Personally, I think you are over-thinking this.
They probably just pull an upper reciever out of the parts bin like everything else. If it's made to spec, it's fine.

yeah, a milspec upper is a milspec upper. Most uppers are forged from only a few plants. Either DPMS or Bushmaster are finishing the upper receivers. Another FG company is making the barrels. FG bought all of those companies to keep manufacturing under its umbrella. AAC makes good stuff. I would be confident in purchasing AAC products.
1858: FG owns AAC. Google it. A dozen links will pop up saying as much. Here is one link: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/27/business/how-freedom-group-became-the-gun-industrys-giant.html?pagewanted=3&_r=0 . AAC might report to Remington, but FG owns both.
Edit: I just read that AAC will not disclose who makes their uppers or barrels. That is strange. Maybe it is an outside company.

FYI, there are only a few companies who actually manufacture the upper receivers. most people just put their brand name on them.
for example, Barrett reciever are made by LMT. I actually think a lot of uppers are made by LMT.
