What do you think is the most under rated handgun cartridge?

What do you think is the most over rated handgun cartridge?

I have a hard time deciding. I think it is a tie between the .44 special and .41 mag. being the most under rated.

I also think it is a wash between the 9mm and .44 mag. being the most over rated.

What are your choices?

My experience is that the most underrated is the various .32 cartridges...either the rimmed variety of the rimless. They've usually been very accurate

The most over rated has to be either the .44 Magnum (rimmed) and the .40 S&W (rimless). Their performance has just been over blown

I would say the most under rated cartridge is the 5.7x28mm. A lot of people try to down play how powerful it really is.

Most over rated would be the 45ACP. It doesn't do anything the 9mm and the 40 S&W don't do just as well.

Underrated = .327

Overrated = .40 I only say that because some people say they will not use anything that doesn't start with a 4. Personally, if something works for you then it is hard to be overrated.

Under-rated: 32 ACP, because it's dismissed as weak cartridge whereas it can be very potent in a BUG.

Over-rated: 40 SW, because it is my opinion that in presence of 10mm and 45 ACP, I dont see role for it, especially when there is also 9mm.

That said, I like variety and for that even some odd ball purpose specific calibers.

.32 H&R Mag is definately under rated! And 500 S&W is definately over rated!

A case could also be made for the .22 WMR being under rated. I use it quite extensively for yote control on down to p-dog.
Anything over .41 Mag that has painful recoil is just no fun to shoot. I do like .45 ACP however, .460 Alaskan is just not fun!

What do you think is the most under rated handgun cartridge?

.327 Federal or .41 Magnum. In the case of .41, underrated just because of lack of usage. Those that use it recognize it.

What do you think is the most over rated handgun cartridge?
.45 ACP.

Under-rated: .380 Auto.

The round has plenty of punch when it's properly placed on the target, and it has been getting the job done for decades. It's often compared to the 9mmx19 in terms of power, and since it can't match the 9mmx19, it gets poo-pooed. People say that unless you need a pocket gun, everything that shoots .380 can be size-matched by something in 9mmx19. Yes, probably so. But some of the classic carry guns (the PPK comes to mind) have never been chambered in anything bigger than .380, and never will be.

Over-rated: All the "super" rounds like 460, 500, 454 Casull, etc. that kick so hard and produce so much muzzle flip you'll probably never get a follow-up defensive shot. YMMV. As for me, if I can't stop it with a .44 Magnum, I get a long gun.

I don't get why so many people are down on the .40S&W. The gripe we hear most is it's a cartridge in search of a purpose, but we hear it from people who have rifles chambered in modern cartridges that are so close in performance to classic cartridges you'd have to look at headstamps to know which was which.

Underrated: I think that the most underrated is probably the .25acp because it is crapped on by virtually everyone despite having very similar performance to the .22lr cartridge when fired from pistol length barrels. It has at least two major benefits over .22lr because it uses centerfire primers which are more reliable then the highest quality rimfire ammo and it also has the benefit of having a FMJ bullet which makes it feed more reliably.

Overrated: I think that extremely large revolver calibers are overrated because the muzzle blast and recoil make it hard to get a follow up shot in. In low light situations it is especially blinding.

It has a lot to do with purpose. So I'll do mine for SD...

Underated: 9mm. Of course, no one wants to get hit with one but acting like it is not "enough" is still fairly common.

Overrated: .44 Mag. It will not actually "blow your head clean off".

+1 on the .22
as for the 40S&W ,I'll say overrated, as there will never be a +p load for it , we have the 10mm , witch is a 40cal, so there is no reason for the 40S&W not that it's a bad round , it's just not as good as the 10mm, and load data shows useing the same bullets

Here's my shocking contribution: the .357 is overrated, _as a cartridge for snub-nosed revolvers_.

Don't get me wrong - I consider the .357 just about ideal when fired from anything with more than a three-inch barrel. From a two-inch barrel, the 9mm delivers almost identical performance, with much less recoil and blast. With three-inch barrels or less, the .40 works just as well.

Underrated? For anything other than self defense or hunting large game, nothing beats the .22lr.

I have to agree with the poster who said the 5.7x28mm is underrated.

Overrated, IMO, is the .22 LR. I absolutely cannot stand shooting a gun in that cartridge, but everyone talks about it like its the holy grail.

Edit: changed my overrated answer

What do you think is the most under rated handgun cartridge?
That's a bit tough. I'd probably say the .380ACP is no where near as bad as some people make it out to be.

What do you think is the most over rated handgun cartridge?
I'd say the .40S&W. IMO it just doesn't do anything that a 9mm or .45ACP can't do just as well so I don't see much reason for it to exist.

Most under rated - .40 S&W

Lots of people like to hate on this round, and very little does anyone back up their claims with any sort of logic or proof. When compared to 9mm, that childhood saying of "anything you can do I can do better" comes to mind.

Most over rated - .45 acp

"If you hit a man in the thumb it will knock him on his butt" This, and many other tall tales about the .45 are spread from idiot to idiot like some sort of manly gospel, and that get's old.

Overrated handgun cartridge: 5.56x45, 45acp.

One is "a rifle round in a pistol!" going too slow out of that pistol barrel to do anything it was designed to do...the other has been eclipsed by more efficient cartridges, yet no other cartridge has as many fanboys as the 45acp.

Underrated handgun cartridge: 22lr, 38 spcl.

You can shoot anything on this continent in the right spot with the 22 and it will die...eventually. $2 worth of ammo that takes up a cig pack worth of space and weighs nothing = ten years worth of meat if you use it right.
the 38 doesn't get the credit it deserves these days. It will do anything. Its just not tacticool anymore.

The .32 revolver cartridge is not underrated; it only has 1 1/2 times the energy of a .22 LR. Yes, it's very accurate, but so?

This sounds like fun, I'll play!

Under-rated: 9x19mm and .22LR. 9mm because so many look down on it as a weak sister. And many people regard the .22 as something only for teaching new shooters that should be housed in cheap firearms.

Over-rated: 10mm. No matter how many times it is read or written, it isn't in the power class for the .41 Magnum and bigger wheelguns.

Most over-rated to me seems to be the .45ACP. Awesome round, but not sitting as high on the hill as it once was, or as some still make it out to be.
Most under-rated: any round fired from a so-called "budget" gun, such as a Taurus, Kel-Tec, Bersa, or Charter Arms.

You're right, this is fun.

Most underrated: A tie between .38 special and .44 special, although the situation has improved the last few years.

Most overrated: The .44 magnum. (One exception is for knocking down steel targets at a distance. That's where the extra speed/power of the .44 magnum comes in handy.)

Overrated: Tough to say, but I'll vote 45 ACP, and that is coming from someone who carries a .45 1911 sometimes. It's a solid cartridge, but if you hit the baddie in the thumb it won't rip his arm off and throw him back 50 feet.

Underrated: I'll agree with a prior poster, 22 LR and 38 Special in particular. The 38 looks weak on paper, but good loads still manage 12"+ of penetration and expansion, even in shorter barrels. .38 is my favorite SD handgun cartridge. Good performance, low recoil and easy follow ups (flyweight pocket blasters excepted).

As said previously, the 38 Special just isn't tacticool these days.

Yeah a lot of people praise the .44 mag because of power. It is powerful, but for any practical use or hunting I'd use a high velocity rifle round such as a 30-06 or a .270

Underrated: Definitely 9mm. While everyone knows that it WILL kill you, a lot of people act like it isn't powerful enough.

Overrated: .44 Magnum (In a handgun). While I own a Super Blackhawk in .44 mag, it is overrated. For hunting, why wouldn't you use a hugh velocity rifle round such as a .308 or .30-06?

I put several boxes of .32 ACP through my Mauser HSc today. Far and away the most underrated round. I'd trust it over several other weapons I've been required to carry... (to include an Army M1911A1 or four that were all junk.)

Over rated, I'd go with .357 Magnum. I can do 99% of what it can do with a .38 Special +P and not have my hand hurting all week afterward if I do it from a snubby.

Some of the votes were a little hard to count, but here is what I came up with for the top votes:

Under Rated

22 LR - 8
327 Federal - 6
41 Magnum - 4

Over Rated

40 S&W - 13
45 ACP - 8
44 Magnum - 7

Overrated- Any round bigger than a .44 Mag. If a .44 mag will kill a bear, a .500 S&W won't kill it more better deader.

Underrated- .357 S.I.G. I don't own anything chaimbered for this round but I wouldn't mind a Glock 33 in .357 S.I.G.

I think a better way to find what is over and underrated would be to ask what peoples top 3 favorite and least 3 favorite cartridges are, and why. The least favorites are likely to be the most underrated, and the favorites over rated. no cartridge is the be all end all magical one size fits all, and no cartridge is worthless either. They all have their place and purposes and if viewed in the correct light they all can shine.

That being said I think the more popular cartridges are over rated, just because of the sole fact that they are all over the place. Some people never venture out see what other cartridges are available. There are quite a few that unfortunately get overlooked by the masses, the situation is even worse in rifle cartridges.

Interesting...A number of responses stating 44 special as underrated and 44 mag as over rated. Similar responses with 38 special and 357 mag.

I love my 629. I love shooting 44 special level loads from it. I love having the capability to shoot the magnums from it too.

So a 44 magnum revolver can be both one of the most underrated and overrated weapons. I realize we are talking about calibers and not handguns per say, but....

10mm is overrated

38 special is underrated

Around here that has a lot to do with inventory control. If it doesn't sell, certain calibers of ammo won't be stocked. If you can't get ammo, why buy the gun? The prime example of that in this area is .357 Sig.

Underrated... .25 Auto. It gets even less love than the .22LR.

Overrated... defensive caliber JHP.

Don't get me wrong; I carry .45 ACP Winchester hollow points in my G21, because they are good quality ammo, made for self-defense. And I want to stack the deck as far in my favor as possible. But, I think I'm just picking up the last couple percent there as compared to a 9X19mm ball ammo - the other ninety-some percent of the equation relies on me being able to shoot, and shoot well.

IOW: software > hardware

I think that the 357 mag is totally over rated. Unless you're using at least a 6 inch barrel all you really are getting is more muzzle blast.

For under rated I'd say 7.62 Tokarev. It doesn't get too much attention since it isn't chambered in any new designs and doesn't have any hollow point loadings, but it is a good performer.

Underrated:
.44 Special, why? Because it combines a big ol' bore with shootability. And everything is more fun when it's bigger and can be done more often.

Overrated:
.40. Why? Because in every gun I have ever shot it has pushed as hard as a .45 and snapped as high as a 9x19. Without doing anything that much better.

Interesting thread.
Suprised at the lack of love the 40 S&W gets...didn't know it was so highly touted as to be overrated.
Also suprised by the 44 mag being viewed so often as overrated...though, I guess there have been lots of claims made.

Overrated goes to the .22 lr, at least for handguns. It just doesn't have enough pop out of a 6" barrel to satisfy me except on the smallest of game. I like it plenty in a rifle.

Underrated: Hard to come up with one, maybe the 454...it gets slammed a fair amount, maybe more than it deserves.

It's really interesting to see the .327 FedMag mentioned so many times.
I didn't know it had such a following....not from a standpoint of gun sales,
gun discontinuations, lack of available ammo....and loading data.
For me and MamaOzo it has become our absolute favorite round.
We shoot A LOT of .32 H&Rmags in sizes from a Blackhawk to GP, SP,
632, 327......because the load data has been around so long....and
have , only recently, started loading for the .327 fedmag because of
brass and data shortages.
I have been loading and shooting/hunting with my [almost] lifelong
favorite .357mag since 1970...and love it.....but this .327 is.....
awesome.
I don't know what the AmEagle and GoldDots are loaded with for
the .327 but if you think it's a wussie little round.....go shoot some.
I would really like to see a lot more talk going on about the .32H&R's
and the .327fedmag's from all the folks that seem to be in the closet
with them...:):)...just kiddin'....
