Hey guys!

Does anybody know who makes or can make a good cross draw rig for a 5.5 inch Blackhawk?

What should I look for in a good holster/belt?

Any other tips on sizing etc.?

Thanks guys,

L

Simply Rugged is very popular with the guys carrying large revolvers. Many of their holsters are 3-slot pancakes holsters making them useful for either strong side or cross draw carry.

Leather and kydex are good materials for holsters, nylon less so.

The general recommendation for a belt for a large heavy gun is a dual layer leather belt. For me, 1 1/2" is the most versatile size, but if you mostly wear jeans you could go with 1 3/4" and if you mostly wear dress slacks, the 1 1/4" is probably the best recommendation. Simply Rugged has a single layer belt that has a good reputation, but they now offer a dual layer belt like most belt makers.

If you want a less expensive belt, The Wilderness Tactical has a very well respected nylon belt. Most will recommend at least the 5-stich version and the CSM will provide even more support.

Some of the better known on-line belt makers are

The Beltman http://thebeltman.net

A&G Custom Leather http://www.agcustomgunleather.com

Just about all the well known holster makers make a gun belt, so if you find a holster you like, it's always easier to get a good match as far as size and color go, to buy the belt from the guy making your holster.

***Pay attention to the sizing information from the belt maker. They all seem to use some slightly different ways to measure size and most are not the same as your pants size.***

It depends on what you intend to do with it. Andrews Leather made a gun belt for me without cartridge loops. I had him made a cross draw holster for my Ruger BH as well as holsters for my other revolvers. I use this rig for hunting. I can always get to the gun, and it doesn't seem to get in the way. Also, if I want to use another revolver, I can just slide off one holster and put on another.

You might also check Milt Sparks. Their HSR in the muzzle forward configuration makes for a very nice crossdraw holster. Have a couple for Blackhawks in various barrel lengths.

Cabela's, Triple K Western. I picked up one for the 5.5" Vaquero, it fits quite nicely. The taller sharper BHawk sights should fit just fine.

yes it's a bit western, but then again, so is carrying a Blackhawk. :D

I use the Galco SAO holster on Triple K gun belts for all four of my various Ruger SA's. It offers me the option of strong side carry, or cross draw,..depending on what I am doing. I do prefer cross draw in the field. Also good for riding. YMMV

Milt Sparks Leather has been making a first class holster that works fine crossdraw, along with matching gunbelts. It's called the HSR. Here is a photo of one in FBI tilt. A crossdraw looks the same buit is mounted reverse tilt to accomodate the crossdraw. ............http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/matquig/DSC06441.jpg
