For 40S&W, I prefer TCFP. The 180 gr TCFP provides very long bearing surface and 170 gr SWC provides comparable bearing surface length. Perhaps it's me, but I tend to attribute more consistent chamber pressure generation with length of bullet base and seating depth.

Cast a few of those today also:

But the most fun comes when you dispose of them at 1000 fps!

Here's a comparison picture of various 40S&W lead bullets. Notice the comparable bearing surface lengths of 180 gr TCFP and 170 gr SWC. My take is that longer the bearing surface, better the gas seal and rotation to stabilize the bullet in flight for more accurate shot groups.

I clicked without voting. I don't shoot or load .40, but I shoot and load 10mm, which uses the same bullets, so I thought I'd have a look. Then I realized the whole thread was about cast lead. I only shoot/use jacketed/plated bullets in that caliber, so I can't really have an opinion about the shape of cast lead bullets.

If it matters, I like something with a slightly rounded shoulder because those seem to feed slightly better that the pure truncated cone shape.

I voted SWC. I load a lot of 40's for IDPA, but most of my loads are plated. I have loaded SWC in the past, and was pleased with my results.

OK, I bit. Of 175 SWC, 175 TC, 165 TC, I prefer the TC. I also prefer flat base, makes inspection and culling much easier. Loading isn't more difficult. All of them make nice round holes. Accuracy is the same for all, the Lee TL grooves appear to go a bit faster with the same load.

I would need to know the use for the ammo before I could choose the bullet shape/type.

Punching paper, SWC
Plinking, LRN
Small game, FN

If you give me the use I can vote for the bullet.

TC works great for me both cast and plated. I think the long bearing surface helps with accuracy and stabilizing the bullet

I like the truncated cone from Berry's in my 10mm Auto and those shoot well in my dad's .40. As I buy them by the thousand and .40 brass is so available I recently bought a Storm Lake .40 barrel to drop into my 10mm. Still experimenting on a pet load there. That being the case, I am thinking about buying some of the flat nose round shoulder bullets for a change.

Hmm, this seems to be the closest one yet.

I guess I will need both.......

For those of you that shoot a lot of them, have you noticed any difference in Flat base versus Bevel base in terms of accuracy ?

Only reason I ask it that FB molds seem to be a little hard to find- the closest in a machine lube bullet is the lee 401-175-TC, and even thats not a true flat base...more like a less pronounced bevel base.
