Ok, I'm dumb, I admit... what do these markings mean on my flattop?

Those are factory quality control marks from the manufacture denoting the number of substandard parts the rifle contains and how many times it had to be rebuilt before it functioned the minimum "3 consecutive fired rounds" standard requirement for distribution.

Yours rated a 12. That's pretty high. :D

You may just want to send that to me so you don't get hurt.

i thought those were used to measure
the depth of the river after the jeep got stuck

they are mounting index points

if every one mounts the red dot at position A,

then if the rifle is picked up on the field,
the sighting system will aim in a similar fashion

there will also be adequate space available
to mount the NV scope behind the RD

For the civilian user it makes it a bit easier to replace optics in the same exact position if you happen to remove them.

But in the end it just increases the "Neato" factor a bit more.

Guy A: Hey man..I got numbers on my rails.
Guy B: Neato.

See...neato factor increases immediately. :D

on the AR list we call that CDI factor
(chicks dig it)
;)

These addresses assist the user in remounting an accessory in the same position,
allows standardization on precisely where to mount certain accessories, and identifies
reference points for discussions on accessory mounting locations.
