Im fixing to put one of these on my m1a zombie/deer rifle. Close enough for the zombies and enough range for deer- should be great as I'm into practicing offhand and wont be doing much long range stuff.
Im a scope newb so no clue here...opinions welcome!

With a $500 budget I'd look hard at a $479, VX-3 2.5-8X36. Close enough and my favorite all around scope. For $300 the VX-2 2-7 is the best bet.
The Vortex and Burris scopes are good scopes, but not in the same league. If you had a $200 budget they would be an option. Just be aware that the Burris has 1/2 MOA clicks instead of the usual 1/4 MOA. The Vortex is quite heavy, which sorta defeats the purpose of a small scope.

Nikon makes a good scope for the money. Redfield is good too for the money.
