Being a good neighbor

So, my wife and I are purchasing a new home within the next month, and We're in the process of closing. Situation: there is a nice little piece of land that I can LEGALLY shoot on (at least 100 yards from a residence), but I'm just over the 100 yard mark. my problem is i don't want to be a rude neighbor and disturb them, but i don't want them to think its their call to say whether i shoot or not. My plan is to pay a friendly visit beforehand, and explain that it will only be for a couple hours on the weekend. But what do i do if my neighbor is anti gun, or doesn't want me to shoot at all? I dont want to start off on the wrong foot, but i don't want to give up my rights.

Set up your range and TELL them about it, then INVITE them to "come shoot one of these weekends".
At no point will you be even remotely apologetic or asking "permission", just being informative and friendly. Hey - if your new neighbors are gun owners, you might have new best friends!
(If they aren't, you could teach them to shoot!)

Shoot when they are at work if you can. NEVER shoot early in the morning, especially on weekends or holidays when they might be sleeping in.

Not annoying the neighbors is a good excuse to buy some suppressors for your guns, if it's legal in your state. What they don't hear they won't complain about. :D

suppressors are expensive, plus the $200 tax stamp. my ideal time for shooting was on Sat-sun between 11am to 3pm, but only for maybe a couple hours a day.

Sounds like you might want to invite them over for a cookout or the like. Maybe they'll see something in your house like a gun safe or something to do with firearms. That should tell you if they're gun friendly or not.

Personally, I would look at the noise ordinance applicable to your county (or town inside city limits.) Comply with the noise ordinance...nothing more, nothing less.
Also make sure you aren't in a no shooting zone for some other reason. My house is 40 yards inside a 500 yard no shooting zone surrounding a local lake. There are websites that will tell you the straight line distance between two points using google maps.

I know it may be pricey especially after buying the property but, how about having a "get to know you neighbor" BBQ or something similar? That way you can get to know them abit before you approach the range question. If they are against the range idea they may tell you why in a friendly way if they know you better. Also as the old saying goes, "you can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar". Let the get together be the honey.

I live in a very similar area as yours. All my neighbours shoot - so you may find that yours do too.
Good luck!

Agreed with intrpoducing it as non-confrontationaly as possible. The cook-out is a good idea, if you can swing it. Getting off on the wrong foot with your neighbors can take years to ammend, so do it right the first time.
It's your property to do with as you wish, but there's nothing saying you have to upset the neighbors from the get-go.

Go for it! Heck, the neighbor might even have a cooler range than what you can build.

Never heard of the 100 yard limit but around here there is no shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied residence and definitley no shooting within the limits of an incorporated town.

Similar situation at a previous home I had. The back of the property dropped 20 feet sharply into a creek bottom -- perfect set up, except the gunfire upset a neighbor lady. I had other options, so shot elsewhere. FWIW, she had called the sheriff who told her I was completely legal. Then she said she wasn't scared, but the noise bothered her... funny she never was bothered by lawnmowers and chain saws next door, but gunfire from a creek bottom a few hundred yards away was a problem?
