Quick question-

Suppose I decide I want a short barreled pump shotgun.

I follow all the NFA and ATF rules and legally get my stamp.

Suppose the host SBS shotgun is a common one like a Mossberg 500.

Would I be allowed to remove my short barrel and put a long barrel on for an afternoon of trap?

I know I could never mount the short barrel on any other receiver.

If I owned more than one Mossberg 500, and the SBS barrel was now sitting unmounted in the safe while I was using the long barrel on the SBS receiver, would this somehow be constructive possession of an unregistered SBS? What if I want a 16" barrel and a 14.5" barrel? Is that two form 4's with the same receiver?

Does this pertain to ARs as well, or any other interchangeable-parts type firearm? If I have a SBR M4 upper and its SBR registered lower, can I put a regular 20" HBAR upper on the SBR lower for some long range target shooting?

I seem to recall one needed to register full auto lowers by caliber- or was that just the drop in auto sears and HK triggerpacks- what about an SBR upper in a different caliber? Or a different SBR upper in the same caliber? If the lower is already SBRed does that mean I can buy as many SBR uppers as I want? Or is it only one SBR upper and one SBR lower, forever married and inseparable?

I'm confused, because I don't think in 1934 they figured on guns with parts that interchange like LEGOs.

Q: May the short barrel on an SBR or SBS be replaced with a long barrel for hunting or other purposes, with the intent of replacing the short barrel?
Yes, and you will not be required to again register the firearm before replacing the short barrel. ATF recommends written notification to the NFA Branch when a firearmís configuration is permanently changed or removed from the purview of the NFA.
