I have an older Winchester 1987 shotgun that I received broken from a friend. And i am at my wits end on how to even disassemble this shotgun. I say wits end because the fore end is stuck in the rearward position and it is impossible to push forward into battery by hand. The bolt itself is free inside the receiver and you can slide it back and forth with your fingers. And the bolt carrier/shell elevator can be moved by hand also. But the carried CANNOT be pushed back into battery fully.

The bolt or the carrier cant be removed in their current position. It seems like a piece has broken off inside the receiver somewhere and it has jammed the whole thing up. Im thinking the part that rides in the groove milled in the left hand side of the bolt carrier has sheared off and jammed the works.

I received this shotgun with a bag of all the pins, bolts, trigger group, action slide hook and other parts that he had already taken off. Any one have the slightest idea how to free the fore end (Action slide according to parts schematics) the bolt and the bolt carrier short of taking a hammer or a hacksaw:what: to this shotgun?

Pictures to follow as soon as I find my camera.

The probrlem with guns in a bag is that often parts are disassembled in the incorrect order.
Get the asembly procedure and study it , I had the same problem and ended up asssemblying some parts/ pins that were taken out of order and before I could reassemble the whole gun , a test of patience.
This particular gun had been stored in a bag for 3 generations, the grandson of the original owner brought it me to fix it.
This was a couple of years ago ,sorry I dont have anymore info.
it was winchester lever action Winchester in I think .307 winchester.

Get the Gun Digest disassembly/reassembly book on shotguns (there are volumes for pistols, rifles rimfire, etc.) It has excellent photos of each part and tips/tricks to help with reassembly.

You first need to determine if you have a take-down model, or a fixed barrel model.

They come apart completely different when it comes to getting the bolt out of the receiver.

Its the take down model. I have the AGI dvd on the '97 but its no help. Like I said, something has broken off inside the receiver and its impossible to close the bolt and its impossible to push the pump forward.

The AGI video on 1897 Winchester shotguns is so good, it is one of those rare anomalies in the gunsmithing world, like Kuhnhausen's book on double action Colt revolvers.

There are ~ 100 parts in a 97. That is double what most other guns have.
I can only take apart and put together Win 97s while watching that video at the same time.

I bought one and a half 97s in basket case condition and made one 97 out of it and sold the rest of the parts.
My family has had a Win 97s since the Seattle dock strike in the 1930s.
