30-30 Spire Point load.

Here are the parts:
30-30 (Savage Mod 219 single shot), IMR 3031, Winchester 150gr PPoints.

I will be using Federal LR primers.....

Lyman 49th Ed lists a load: 26.5 gr @ 1876fps up to 28.5 gr @ 2145 fps both listed for 150gr RN bullets....

My question is, will the spire points show an appreciable increase in speed and will this load be sufficient to expand the bullet @ those velocities.

Your load dats looks good. I checked it in my (Lyman 46th Ed):p But I dont think you will see a velocity increase attributable to the point over a flat. I think it will open up for you though.

www.hodgdon.com lists 30.5 as a max load for the 30-30 with 150gr bullet weight, and should be fine in your M219 single shot, as you work up a load.
The advantage of the spire point bullet will be seen down range because of it's shape, when compared to RN or FN style bullets, as they shed velocity faster than the spire point. It is unlikely that the velocity will be much different at the muzzle.

Interesting how the data changes from time to time and book to book. I have a Hornady manual from 1967 and it lists 33.8 gr of 3031 as the max load with a 150 gr RN.

My old Lyman Manual vintage about 1957 says 32 gr.

Lyman #49 28.5 gr

My go to load for many years is 31.5 gr. The vel should be a little over 2200 FPS. (by the book) Yes, it will expand, and yes it will shoot clear through a mulie at 50 yards if it doesn't hit any real large bones.

You see, I started loading in 1957 and the data I had at the time was the current Lyman manual.

How things change. My advise: Download current loading data from the powder manufacturers and start low and work up looking for signs of over-pressure as you go. That is always the way to go whenever working up a new load.

Yes, the manuals are great, but as I have shown, not in agreement. Get current data. Even then, the real test is, "What is the load going to do in my rifle?"

Increase in speed? Probably not but it will stay ay higher velocities longer because of the increased BC. Just be sure the bullet you're using will reliably expand at the lower velocities associated with the 30-30, that is your main concern when using a pointy bullet not meant for the 30-30...

I have been loading Spitzer loads for my Savage M340 bolt action, and it shows generally what the prior posters said - similar velocities but shoots flatter.
One problem I did encounter, and may or may not be a factor for you - my M340's magazine limits the OAL, and loading the spitzers to the cannelure results in the cartridge being too long for the magazine, with any bullet of 125 grain or heavier. So I have to seat them deeper to feed. Even shooting singleshot fasion from my Marlin 336 has a problem, as the cartridge is too long to eject unless fired.
