The LGS has five used 870P's for sale. They are being sold as used but they all look brand-new!!

So what would you suggest I look out for while picking one out?

Don't pay too much attention to surface appearance, concentrate on the mechanical aspects of the guns. Look out for 'road grime' (dust, dried lube etc) inside the guns, however, that can mask their true mechanical condition. Get the one that is most functional mechanically. The bolt should reciprocate smoothly, with the 'drag' over the hammer being the exception. Note especially the carrier - it should snap up briskly as the bolt opens.

Having someone along who knows 870s well would help, if you know someone like that.

^^ Fred....
Thank You for the suggestions. I'll look over the inside/breach and examine down the barrel best I can looking for wear-marks, mars on screw-heads, crud, any rust and such.

I alway take a look at the:
barrel - does it have a bulge, are the choke threads in good shape,is the rib still attached fully (red flag)

Stocks- 870's are known for cracking the stock right behind the receiver.

Trigger grp/receiver- make sure lock up is tight and ask if you can run a few snap caps through it to check function of the action and lifter IE: will it eject and feed reliably.

With that being said it takes a lot of abuse to wreck or stop a 870, I would pick the prettiest one and go shoot the snot outta it:)
