CHighfield November 12, 2012, 10:53 PM Is there a way that I could just order a 700 with everything I want? I don't feel like going through the hassle of ordering one, trying to sell off the old stock after getting a new one, etc. I just want a .308 with a heavy barrel, irons, box mag, and a decent stock.

creeper1956 November 12, 2012, 11:13 PM Remington Custom Shop. They'll do "variations" of existing models... for example, an XM3 with a 20" barrel. The XM3 already has front and rear 1913 rails, so you can mount any irons you want. The 40-X series (http://www.remingtoncustom.com/40X_40xbks.aspx) is actually a better, more flexible baseline with a longer options list, so, IMO, that'd be what I go with.
CHighfield November 13, 2012, 01:02 AM Thanks a lot. For some reason their website (remington.com, not the custom shop) wouldn't display on my computer. Maybe they just don't like Safari users. I'll have to check out what monstrosities I can make
creeper1956 November 13, 2012, 01:34 AM I don't know if you want a tactical rifle or a hunter... your combination has some kinda odd elements to it. There are a boatload of custom rifle gunsmiths out there that can build you a rifle, and in some cases faster (and better) than Remington. My three favorite precision rifle builders are Kelbly's (http://www.kelbly.com/rifles.html), Spencer Rifle Barrels (http://www.spencerriflebarrels.com/) and Nate Lambeth (http://customgunsandammunition.com/index.html).
Good luck with it,

CHighfield November 13, 2012, 10:55 AM haha I don't know what I want either. I want both, really. I want the irons for backups, a decent mid-power scope, a heavier barrel, and I'm really liking the 700 stock on one of their rifles (looks mostly standard, but with a thumb hook in the butt) I want to be able to take it out to ~800yd, but still use it for hunting/walking around.
jmr40 November 13, 2012, 02:31 PM You'll be better off and cheaper to buy a used gun as cheap as you can find one in a pawnshop. Get it in a chambering using the correct boltface for 308. Have a smith rebarrel, refinish, and restock it the way you want it. Have a custom trigger installed while you're at it. It won't take any longer than ordering a custom shop rifle, will cost less and be a better rifle.
rodensouth November 13, 2012, 05:21 PM Can a gunsmith just order a 700 action cheaper than used rifle?

No. Having built 2 custom rifles using used rifles as the starting point, after you sell off the used rifle parts you don't need, you usually have about $250 in the action. You cannot buy a M700 action for that little money.
