Can the safety mechanism on a post 1964 Model 70 .30-06 be replaced? It works OK in all three positions, but it would be nice if there was a little more of a positive feel to it's center position. Probably would just need to replace the tang portion where the divots are.

Can this be done by me?

The rear portion of the bolt is called the bolt shroud. There is a used one for sale on GunBroker for $32. You could eMail the seller and find out why the shroud was removed from the original rifle and it's condition. The Gunbroker item number is 316097636. Shooter

It can be done, but I doubt if it will change anything. There is probably nothing wrong with the safety switch you have and a new one will likely work the same.

Without actually seeing your gun it is hard to say for sure, but this sounds normal to me.
