What calibers have you taken deer with?

I frequently read threads about what are you hunting with and what to hunt with, but which calibers have you actually taken a deer with, not just merely carried afield? I do not have as much variety as I'd like at times being limited to shotgun only areas but here is the list:
7.62x54r wolf gold 180grn soft points
7.5x55 swiss wolf gold 174grn soft points
12 gauge 300grn sabots

I live in Indiana so we are limited to shotgun, ml, or a centerfire of a max 1.8 case length and a min. of 35 cal. That being said I have taken many deer with a 12 guage using lightfield slugs and 285 grain barnes spitfire ml. bullets with a knight longrange hunter.

I always got a kick out of the ranger sitting on the tongue of our trailer---( 5:30 am--30 deg ) I said" come in you can hear better" I asked him why you guys give me a hard time for using a 222----he said because you once -a-year guys are not capable of properly shooting a deer with a 222.
I said" what do you guys use for winter kill---he said " we buy 30,000 rds of 222--he said " best kill for the money at close range"

Just by looking at the list so far, apparently every caliber is capable of taking deer and has been used from .22lr to .375 H&H including cars, trucks, and arrows.
It is funny that which caliber for deer is debated and argued frequently, when it looks like whatever you have will work assuming it is legal in your area and you are proficient enough with it.

I haven't seen anyone post they have killed a deer with a spear yet though.

F150.
This is officially my favorite reply in this thread! I've taken one with a Chevy Colorado and another with a Toyota Corolla. My wife also took a nice buck with her brand new 2003 Corolla on the way home from buying it off the dealer's lot! The car had 41 miles on it!

For me:

50 cal ML (X many)
25-06
270 (X many)
44 magnum
257 Weatherby (X several)
308

I started totaling up (as best as I can remember over almost 25 years) and it occurred to me that I've taken almost as many deer with a 50 cal muzzle loader than with all my centerfire guns combined. Kentucky has an early two day ML hunt in October and I often take one then, and I often take a doe during the weeklong December regular ML season.

I've hit a bunch of deer with various vehicles but I never found any bodies so they may or may not have died:

1. Schwinn Super Sport 10 speed. That hurt (concussion and broken clavicle)

2. Chevy Blazer

3. Chevy Impala ($1,300 damage back in the 80s)

4. Chevy Suburban

5. Cadillac Deville

I may have forgotten some.

Since they didn't necessarily die, I should probably use something bigger next time.

This is a fallacy. Vehicle placement is much more critical than the size of the vehicle.

I have killed deer with a Nissan. A 4 pointer came off a hill at a dead run and totalled my truck. The driver behind me gave me a lift and when I came back an hour later the deer had been picked up. I guess someone needed venison REALLY badly.

The OP`s question was (What calibers have you taken deer with?) I think I am the only one to answer the question correctly, I don`t believe cars & trucks are CALIBERS nor are arrows.......Well I guess the OP should have just said (What have you taken deer with?) Then we all could have said anything, cars, trucks, bows & arrows, rock, get my drift, you know just saying...........

I know a guy who killed one with an axe.

The story goes something like this. Deer ran into a tree, stunned itself. Axeman was close by, ran up and chopped it in the neck.

It's a much longer story, it comes up frequently during deer season.

30-30 and .223 here. I own a plethora of other calibers, with that being said most all shots are incredibly close and in all honesty it's very easy to be "over gunned". I try and play it simple with a Marlin 336 and occasionally my XM-15. Also have taken one buck with a crossbow and hope to try it again in the future.

Took my first Western Washington Blacktail today with a 280 Rem w/150 grn core lokt handload @2800 fps at about 50-60 yards.

It was 1 and done, @ 7:45 AM this morning on a 20% grade up hill shot head on,
bullet entered through the base of the neck just inside the left shoulder and exited the ribs on the right side
just in front of the rear haunches, innards were complet goo.
Was all great, cept I had to drag him about 300 yards to the road.

I took a Fallow Deer Doe in September in Eastern Washington with a sportered Yugo mauser in 8mm ,
another 1 and done with a 180 grn Ballistic Tip @ 2600 fps (another handload) broadside 130 yds.

Took a couple Pronghorn Antelope in Wyoming last fall with the above 280 Rem and 130 grn handloads @ 2900 fps. Both broadside @ 175 & 125 yds.

that about covers it !

Think I'll use the 7mm mauser or the 300 Savage next time, or maybe the muzzle-loader or the 30-30 or maybe the 375 win, Damn too many choices !!

Remington CDL 30-06
Browning BAR Longtrac oil finish 30-06
Winchester m70 Suoergrade (FN made) 300 winny
Kimber Montana 338 Federal
This season was my first to use the 338 federal and i took a nice doe opening morning with a double lung shot, deer didn't go 10 feet. Then i took a tall 7 point buck with the same rifle and it dropped like it was struck by lightening from a high double lung shot. First deer od over 25 that dropped and im very pleased with the Kimber Montana but even happier that it's chambered in 338 federal because that round using a 185 grain TSX load hits with authority! IMO its the best big game rifle/chambering/bullet I've found thus far. The rifle fits my walking style of hunting and the cartridge is pretty devastating.

Total of 8 deer I think.

I don't think any of the deer noticed any difference.

Primarily 270 and 30-30. I am fond of the core lokt remington 270 and leverolution hornandy 30-30.

Any caliber that will kill deer cleanly, but I have only used the above to kill deer.

Dropped a 160 pound 8 point this past Tuesday with 130 grain 270 core lokt.

what calibers have I not taken a deer with.

79 Mercury Marquis and lots of centerfire rifles, slug guns, muzzleloaders , crossbows, and compound bow. They all work. Use good equipment, sight in properly, good loads, and practice and you will find they all work well.

Dont get hung up on magnum BS or the latest, greatest marketing bull for other products. No substitute for practice and good equipment that set up properly.

But remember no wild shots like rear end shots or running shots you should not take.

I would stay away from rimfires and centerfire .22s for deer no matter what the experts say or the Ammo companies with their 223 "deer loads". Be humane . Also some calibers and loads are illegal for game in some states so dont break the law.

Just took one yesterday with a modern Steyr in 6.5X54 MS.

Running a 140 grain partition at 2500 fps. Bang flop from 100 yards. Easy shot but was also able to take my time and having just shot about 50 rounds the week before into a 100 yard target I knew exactly where I was going to hit.

30/06, .270, 30/30, 7mm08,.308, 6.5x55, .44 mag, 12 ga, 20 ga. Current deer gun is a Benelli M2 in 20ga and a Tikka 7mm/08 for late season hunts where high powered rifles are allowed in southern Iowa.
