Iím looking to go to upstate New York to hunt, my question becomes can I fly up north to hunt? I want to hunt BOW season then go up for Rifle and Shotgun, so can I fly up to New York and bring my Gun and my bow with me.

Yes, but you will have to store the gun appropriately and go through a special check-in process when you arrive at the airport. Not sure about how the bow should be stored for transportation.

Check the Airline you fly....They have specific regs on weapons.

If you're flying into Rochester you might be fine; but you'll probably end up in jail if you try to fly through LGA or JFK with one.

NY State has some laws that make it illegal to transport a long gun through the state as a non-resident unless you are going to an NRA-certified event, IIRC. of course, you should go to the State's website and read their laws yourself.

After my experiences with rifles and TSA, i highly recommend FedEx or UPS.

If NY allows it, you can do it but the hassle and the extra baggage fees make it a very unpleasant experience anymore. It used to be a piece of cake but then 9-11 happened and you know the rest.

You're thinking of hand guns, not long guns. How do you think non-residents gun hunt in NY every day?

Before you go, check the state and local regulations to make sure whatever firearm you are taking is legal at your final destination. Then, check the airline's website for their special regulations about carrying firearms and a bow. You will need to get a hard, lockable case to store you rifle and ammunition in. The same goes for your bow and arrows. Some airlines will let you fly the rifle and ammunition in the same case, others want them separate. When you check in for your flight, you must declare that you have a firearm. They will inspect it to make sure it is unloaded and they will likely treat it as a "special checked bag." When you arrive at your final destination, the rifle case will probably not come out on the conveyor belt. You'll probably have to pick it up at the "oversize baggage" counter.

It's a pain in the butt to travel with firearms, especially in NY, but it is definitely doable. Just make sure you check with the airline and follow their rules to the letter. As long as you do that, you'll be fine.
