A sheriff in a neighboring county was arrested for DWI by a state trooper. The trooper took his gun.
When the trooper booked the sheriff into jail the jailers found he had another gun in a ankle holster.
So either ankle holsters work really well, or the trooper needs a remedial course in searching suspects.

This link describes the sheriff's release. I'll see if I can go back a day or two for the story that includes the ankle holster.

Sounds like he didn't search the guy at all.

Thats just Urine poor (dont want the fcc after me) officer safety. I can see some things (small things) getting missed on a casual pat down. BUt a pistol in an ankle holster is something that should be found by even the most amatuer officer during a frisk. I don't care if the suspect is LEO, a franciscan monk, or the second coming, you search em before you put em in the car. And the ankle is one of the areas that even the greenest of the green know to check.

Later reports indicate that the sheriff resisted arrest a little; maybe the trooper was just really glad to get him in the car, but still he should have searched him for another gun. I mean if anyone is likely to have a second gun it would be a law enforcement officer. The sheriff by the way, claims he was not drunk and that the trooper broke three of his ribs. The sheriff does not explain why he refused the breathalyzer if he wasn't drunk, or why he looks pretty darned drunk on the video.
