Just received a S&W 38 special revolver. It is 6 shot, steel frame with matt black finish on top of barrel. Serial # J46075x. What model would this be?
thanks

Well, for starters, if it is .38 Special, and six shot, it cannot have a J4607x serial number.

All J serial prefex guns were J-Frame, and all J-frame .38 Spl's are five shot.
The cylinder isn't big enough for six holes that big.

Sorry I meant 5 shot. Wood grips that fit frame and don't hide either front or back. 3" long barrel.

Conventional hammer spur?
Shrouded hammer spur with the top of the hammer visible??
Or no visable hammer?
Fixed sights or adjustable sights?

Anyway, the J serial number prefix was used from 1969 to 1983.
On Model 36, 37, 38, 49, and 50.

The date would be 1976-77.

But the exact model cannot be determined without more complete information.

More then likely though it is a standard 3" Model 36 Chiefs Special.
