I am planning on building a new AR and I would like to get some ideas other than my own.

Please post pics of your AR and describe your platform.

Thanks for your help.

You probally need to state what your main intentions are. I've got 4 AR15 rifles and each is set up different. Do you want a 7-8 pound carry and shot rifle or do you want a 13-14 pound varmint rig? I've got an 18" built 6.8spcll a 243wssm and 2 223 rifles that I use for different things

I guess my platform is empty. Never felt the need for bulbous geegaws and doohickies sticking out at all angles. To me the advantage of the AR15 was that it was light and compact. I prefer to keep things simple. I never even missed having the forward assist.

SaxonPig, That’s a beautiful rifle! One of these days I want something similar.

As suggest above, you need to decide what you expect of the rifle and go from there. I have a (cool to me) carbine that’s not worth a crap beyond a couple hundred yds. I have a rifle that’s not worth a crap inside of 50 yds.

If I could find the guy who got the whole internet to start calling rifles Platforms.... I would be tempted to shoot him with.....my Platform.
+1 I agree 100%. This is one of those terms that is a burr under my saddle.

But then again that guy who invented "truck nuts" made a lot of money on that nonsense.

I bought mine as a fun gun at the range and for whitetail, hogs and such when time allows. A Daniel Defense M4V7 with a Burris 2-7x FFII in a Nikon mount and a Geissele SSA trigger. My first, a recent acquisition, and what fun it is.

In military terms, a capability is simply a means to accomplish a task, and in the abstract is not tied to any particular methodology or hardware.

"Platform" is a correct technical term for the selected means by which a capability is conceptually or actually achieved, whether it's a rifle, a ship, a tank, an aircraft, a piece of software, specific training, etc. It is most commonly used to describe hardware.

I'm with Saxon on this one. Less is more.

I made a few upgrades to the grips and trigger guard, but otherwise it's A1. I don't see tap/rack/bang as any improvement on rack/bang. I suppose there are circumstances where you'd need to jam the thing into battery, but I'm unlikely to encounter them.

Here's my first build. The platform on which it rests is manufactured by Nissan. I've moved the scope forward and swapped the A2 stock for a 6-pos collapsible, since the pic was made. Swapped the Maxima platform for an Altima.

Simple is good, and nothing wrong with that. In fact, if I ever get another AR, I might go the along the lines of the plain Jane A1.

However, this is my current rifle. Bushmaster M4A3 with an Eotech 512 and a YH BUIS. The factory collapsible stock and handguard has been replaced with Magpul CTR and MOE handguard. The light is a Surefire 6PX LED in an Elzetta mount. I prefer the 6 o'clock position it offers. The Magpul sling has been replaced with VTAC 2-point sling and I use a Tango Down "Stubby" VFG. I use the VFG as more of handstop than a grip.

I use this for LEO work, shooting/instructors classes, training, etc.

I favor the Colt LE-6920 M-4 and have one I've kept totally stock; however, this one is my baby. I love the Mag-Pul CTR stock, have it set up with MOE handguards, Mag-Pul BUIS, EOTECH 512, MS3 sling, PMags, Surefire Mini-Scout light on the Mag-Pul Scout Mount ... photo taken with the totally gratuitous MOE VFG attached, but I don't like VFGs and never use 'em.

Here's mine. Spikes lower with a CMMG LPK, A2 stock, YHM 20" upper, and a Nikon scope mount. The scope in the picture is a Redfield (that is now on my Hog Hunter), but I've got a Nikon BDC 3-9x40 scope on it now (which is both more functional and more aesthetically pleasing).

This gun is dead nuts accurate and will hopefully be put to use killing hogs, coyotes, and perhaps the occasional deer.

My Colt 6920 that was purchased in September of 2011. Its primary use is for home defense, and fun at the range, and last is SHTF. I love the Magpul CTR stock and the MOE hand guards that enable me to put a small section of rail for the light. I had Troy quad rails on it but they made the rifle too heavy. The optic is the Aimpoint PRO with Magpul rear MBUS. If I need to carry the rifle for any length of time it is equipped with the VTAC 2 point padded sling.

A top quality red dot and white light offer lots of advantages in the modern world. I prefer to go as short as possible, as light as possible, and as versatile as possible while still using rugged, high quality kit that won't let you down.

Lightweight profile barrel at 14.5" + pinned flash hider, lightweight rifle length FF rail, Aimpoint Micro, MBUS, 2-Cell Surefire, simple VLTOR Modstock. It's ready to go with less weight than most people's scoped, Gov't profiled (or M4 Profiled) carbines with needlessly heavy rails, unnecessary bipods, etc. Too many people buy an M4 type carbine and try to turn it into a Sniper rifle. That ain't what it's for.

Work smarter, not harder.

Mine is a BCM 16" carbine with the following:
-Geissele SSA trigger
-H2 buffer
-Knight's RAS rail system
-Aimpoint CompM2
SureFire M951 w/ Malkoff M61 LED upgrade + SR-05 switch
-A.R.M.S. #40-L rear BUIS

I wanted a rifle like the one I was issued, and I made it a little better with a MagPul stock and Geissele trigger. Shoots 2 MOA or slightly under (on a good day) with Lake City "green tip" and I'm extremely pleased with this set-up. My other rifle will be a Noveske 14.5" Lo-Pro which I don't have pictures of as it is not yet complete (still needs a lower and optic).

I try to keep my AR:s fairly stock. Most of the semi autos are A1:s and A2:s with nothing more than a handle mount scope, if that, but the ones I've customized externally are something like...

11" "Commando", suppressor, Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 / Holosight (interchangeable)
10" 9mm, suppressor, Aimpoint
20" dedicated .22 A1, suppressor, 3x30 scope
16" flat top bull barrel, A1 lower range gun, various scopes
20" pencil barrel A1 + M203
20" R-25 .308, Meopta 4-12x50 scope, Harris bipod

No rails, no flashlights, no lasers, no tacticool. Form follows function.

Nice to see all the A1's in this thread. My A1 is based on a early Bushmaster and has a Colt 4X scope. I recently found a usgi three prong and replaced the dpms copy I had on it.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/AR15/BMA101.jpg

Another Bushmaster M4gery, I built this when YHM started producing their hand guards, flash hiders and fold down FSB's. RE and stock is a Vltor Emod and it has a Nikon M223 with Matech buis. Pearce 1911 grip.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/AR15/BMM401.jpg

This is for distant steel in 6.5G. I started with a Overwatch 24" barrel and upper. Original built with a AP lower and RRA two stage, I recently added a Alexander Arms lower and ArmaLite two stage lpk, changed the Vltor A5 to a UBR. Topped off with a 6.5-20X50 Vortex Viper.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/65Grendel/g01.jpg

Long range with power, Noveske N6 20" upper on a ArmaLite AR-10B lower. PRS stock, SWS hand guard, and sets on Atlas legs. I enjoy shooting this more than anything in the house.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/AR10/AR10noveske01.jpg

More AR's...this is a 16" A3 upper on a AP lower, UBR, YHM, LMT sights with a PA micro on a ADM QD mount.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/AR15/july12build01.jpg

My iron sight shooter, a dpms mini sass bull barrel in a A2, custom lower with ArmaLite guts. The barrel is 1-8, very heavy and very accurate...it was very cheap. Apex mid length hand guard.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/AR15/fama201.jpg

More parts came in yesterday, a fail zero BCG and CORE15 charging handle for a new PSA 16" upper, it well get a AP lower that has a LMT M4 stock. Probably a Aimpoint.

Rock River 16" midlength flattop, chrome lined Wilson heavy profile barrel with 5.56mm chamber, Eotech 516 optic, Magpul MBUS rear sight, Vickers style sling from Blue Force. The gas key screws and castle nut had to be staked after I got it because Rock River only made a token effort at the former and didn't bother with the latter.

FWIW, on terminology, the "platform" is the underlying design, not an individual rifle. One can correctly speak of the "AR-15 platform" or the "Remington 700 platform" but an individual rifle is a rifle, not a platform.

Not real big on the tacticool routine.

Top: Generic .223 rifle with a Krieger barrel. It seems to hit what I aim at over long distances.

Center: Armalite AR 10 with a 22 inch Kreiger match barrel. The current sights are Centra CG series. It also seems to hit what I aim at. Timney match trigger also. I really enjoy this rifle.

Bottom: Colt .223 match sporter also with a match trigger. Nice little rifle.

My AR is smarter than your AR. Built from a PSA rifle kit on a PSA lower. Aimpoint, sling & light. Has over 2500 rounds through it and shoots great. Platform is over fifty, overweight and wears a Henschel hat to keep the rain off the glasses

Thanks for all the posts guys. I appreciate the input and the advice. I will also try not to use the phrase "platform" anymore lol.

Thanks again for the help.

SBR lower, an early M&P15. Non-ramped barrel and upper. Barrel is a medium profile 11.5" 1/7 twist. Muzzle device is a PWS CQB comp, gas block is VLTOR.
Forearm is a modular Troy TRX-E 11". Magpul AFG1 to keep me from shooting my finger off. I like the AFG1 better than the AFG2.
Badger charging handle with RTV silicone "gas buster"
Troy front and rear sights, EoTech, no riser and absolute co-witness.
Lower has a LPK that I found in my sock drawer, MagPul trigger guard and MIAD grip.
Stock is a RRA "entry" stock with a Troy ambi QD sling swivel. This adds 1/4" to the LOP and makes it perfect. I don't like adjustable stocks, just put one on that is the correct length for the intended use and forget about it. H2 buffer.
I've dyed most of my P-mags that brick color (sunshine orange actually) so I won't lose them.
Currently it has a PRO mounted instead of the EoTech.

I originally built this as a dedicated HD rifle, hence the fat barrel and the enormous PWS dogknot, weight was a non-issue. But there was a certain synergy in the way it handled and shot so it ended up doing yoeman duty. I drag it around most everywhere now.

I've got other ARs, but that is the only one with a pic handy.
