$1400 to Spend......

You have a "good" supply of handguns, but not too great on long guns. Already have an AR. You have $1400 to spend. What do you get?????:banghead:

One of the Daniel Defense variants would fit the bill.

Start with a 22LR with a Ruger 10/22 and/or Marlin 60 ($200+/-). Go to 7.62x39 SKS ($300). Then Ruger American or Savage Axis .308 ($325/$350) spend the rest on optics & ammo. Also consider a NEF Handi-Rifle in .223 or a pistol caliber that compliments what you already own. You may have fun with a lever action in the aforementioned pistol caliber. Or a nice Carbine.

Benelli M2 or M4, or an M1a as stated.

^^ This, and a good lever gun, like a Henry. Anything left over? A good .22, like a Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60. Or maybe the Henry lever gun would be a .22 (I don't hunt, so I probably wouldn't feel much need for a centerfire lever gun, but I like them.) If I still had a Franklin left over, maybe a Mosin-Nagant.

Hmm, I could really go for a good long range target gun with bull barrel, nice scope, maybe .223 and hopefully I'd have enough left over for a .357 mag lever action.

A good condition Winchester Model 70 Featherweight from the 1950's.
.308 or .30-06 if you do not mind the recoil.

This was several hundred less than $1,400.

The only long gun you mention is an AR...if that's the only one you own then I would buy:

.22 rifle
12 gauge shotgun
bolt action rifle in either 30-06 or .270

With some careful shopping you might be able to get all three for $1,300.

You need to provide more detail on the intended use of this rifle in order to answer your question. Let me know if you want a hunting rifle or a target rifle. Do you want to go bolt action or semi auto? How much shooting experience do you have? At what range will you shoot? Do you reload or will you buy factory ammo?

If I had handguns pretty much covered, and my only long gun was an AR, I'd get a shotgun and a .22 rifle. If I had need or want, I'd get a good bolt gun in .30 something caliber. To be specific, I'd get a Mossberg 12 guage of some sort, either a 10/22 or decent bolt action .22 and a .308 by either Savage or whoever tickled my fancy.

In order of importance (most to least) and price (least to most):

bolt action .308 with scope

You should be able to get all three with your budget.

A good centerfire bolt gun in the caliber of your choice.
But then again, I'm mainly a hunter, so that's always my first answer.

I second the motion on the Ruger Gunsite Scout. Spend the balance on ammo and then see if you want optics. It has good GI type sights on it so you may not need optics for medium range shooting.

Or same as above, some ammo, and a Ruger 10/22 also. Gotta have a .22 in your cabinet...a must have really. I know because I did without for so long. Country boys know this (which I was once but am no longer)...and I discovered I missed shooting .22.

If into hunting, a decent 30-06 bolt action and scope or a 30-03 lever action and scope. If do the 30-30 plus scope, likely have enough for a pump action shotgun. Shotguns are fun if you have a place to shoot clays.

If not into hunting, the M1A is a great choice. Probably find it used for that point.

I'm honestly baffled at how many people need to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet how to spend their money. If you have $1400 and don't know what to do with it, don't do anything with it. Save it, pay off debt, buy a 5yr CD or save it until you find something you can't live without. Did I mention saving it???

There's a bunch of FNAR's listed on gunbroker at the $1k right now.

That leaves $400 for a good scope. :)

Probably wouldn't spend it on a gun I would ever shoot. I can accomplish anything I need to accomplish with a gun for far less than 1400. A good pistol or shotgun is 400-700. A good rifle can be had for the same although I spent a little more on the deer rifle I am currently using. a good ar15 can be put together for a lot less. I would by a safe queen. Probably a lever action Winchester or s&w revolver. I find myself doing that when I get the chance.

I get another AR. I have three now, and I think I am only scratching the surface of the versatility of the platform. My last one is a 22lr.
Good ammo is getting expensive. So think about all the options you think should be on an AR and start shopping for the parts for your
next build. If you have anything left pick up whatever ammo or reloading components you can.

Option two, pick up a good AK and a bunch of ammo.

I'd keep the money until a gun really reached out to me and said "take me home". I realize this is sort of a ... what would you do if you won the lottery thread on a smaller scale...

Better to save for a gun you really want than find one you like well enough because money is burning a hole in your pocket. I did the former when I was younger, ended up selling off or trading many of them. Now I stash extra cash, and it's there when that "gotta have" item comes along, instead of me going "crap, I just spent everything I had and now this turns up".
