Hi All

I am writing a module for forensic radiographers which includes references to arms manufacturers and ammunition manufacturers. I am placing photographs in this module and I would like to have them correctly captioned and the brands, models and manufacturers correctly credited.

From what I can gather online, a company can only use the registered trademark symbol if that trademark has been properly registered. So for example the Glock brand is a registered trademark and should be written as Glock®.
If a company has applied for a registered trademark but it hasn't been granted yet, then they can use ™ instead.

An item may be described in terms of a manufacturer/brand and a model, for example Speer Gold Dot. It is my understanding that both the Speer name and the Gold Dot product are registered trademarks and it should be written as Speer® Gold Dot®.
I could get a hint on that by going to their website and checking how they do it.

However, what happens if I can't find this info?

For example one of the rifles I mention is a Sabre Defence AR-15 style rifle.
Let's say I couldn't find any info on Sabre Defence as a company because they were no longer in business. What is the preferred strategy: leave it plain or put a ™?

What about AR-15? I understand that is a registered trademark of Colt, but does that mean if I am discussing a straight pull variant of an AR-15 made in the UK, I must describe it as AR-15® or does that only apply to the rifles manufactured by Colt? (Which would make it Colt® AR-15®).

Or maybe I am over thinking this and I should forget about the symbols and just have a single disclaimer at the end such as:

The company, product and service names used in this web site are for identification purposes only. All trademarks and registered trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

What says the hive?

This isn't about gun laws, it's about trademark law. Off topic.
