I knew Green Top was popular...but I didn't know it would so utterly dominate the list for the entire state of Virginia

Records only go back to 2006, and are sorted by number of guns sold by default, not by year. So in 2009, 2010 and 2011, Green Top Sold more guns in the State of Virginia than any other store in ANY year from 2006-2012. Green Top sold more guns in 2006, 2007 and 2008 than any store in Virginia in ANY year, other than the Hanover Gander Mountain in 2011...which is weird, because that Gander Mountain store is not even close to the top of the list for other years...and that store just closed down. I wonder what happened in 2011 to boost their sales.

Those types of numbers for Green Top almost put it into the Big Box Store category.

They also have it listed as Henrico...I am pretty sure it was Hanover in both the old location and the new location

The address listed for that GM entry leads to the corporate office in St. Paul, MN.

That's an interesting report. Green Top sold 18,387 firearms in 2011. Dang.

Remember how some folks predicted the end of Green Top when Bass Pro opened a mile away in 2008? :)

Wow, Whitetail Outfitters made the top 25 for 2011 and they are just a small store here in SWVA. I see sales nearly tripled in 2011 compared to the previous three.

And you are correct, Green Top is located in Hanover. Henrico keeps gun shops out of the county through zoning laws. Colonial was only able to open because they employ as "Director of Training" the ex-Chief of Police, who is a good friend of the County Manager. Zombie Defense has no such connections and is being pushed out of the county... and surprisingly enough is looking at moving to Hanover.

It is also interesting that in a 5 mile stretch of Rt 1 you had Green Top, Gander Mtn, Bass Pro, Ashland Firearms, and TTI. Central Virginians sure love their guns.

This is fascinating. I like Green Top and make a visit almost every time I go to the Richmond area. The people are super helpful. But I had no idea that their volume was this large. As for Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shops, etc. , I've found them to be pretty high in price for many of the things I've wanted. Most of my local gun shops can beat them or even do a $25.00 FFL transfer for an online firearm.

Wasn't aware Zombie defense was being pushed out. Henrico is getting a new county manager though.

My dad always tells me of a gun shop that used to be at the corner of Parham and Patterson, it is now a Verizon store. He said this was back when Henrico was allowed to have a 7 day waiting period and the shop owner told him he just couldn't stay in business like that. Henrico made it as tough as possible to get a CHL as well, until the state kept passing laws to make it easier for everyone. HURRAY FOR PREEMPTION!!!

I get to Richmond for family visits once or twice a year and try to make a point of stopping at Green Top. Never been there when it wasn't busy. The number that surprises me isn't theirs, but that Gander Mountain sold so many. That place always seemed empty.

When you add up Trader Jerry and Trader Jerry's 2,the total is 14k+ for 2011.

I imagine the number for Trader Jerry includes dozens of gun shows. He almost has his own aisle at Showplace show. ;)

"Henrico keeps gun shops out of the county through zoning laws."

Dick's sells guns in Henrico, not a mile or so south of the old Green Top location.

Anybody remember when Richmond City required the buyer to go downtown and get a permit before every deal and the seller had to get one too? That drove the shops out of town. Then not too long ago the City Council got involved in the development of a new mall on southside and, bam, next thing you know Galyan's was selling guns without getting permits. That law got changed in a hurry.

Thirty or 40 years ago Harris-Flippen sold guns and sporting goods downtown on Main Street and Linwood Hopgood's gun shop was farther downtown.

Dick's is not a gun shop. The county is fine with big box stores that also sell guns. But they don't like gun shops. Every wonder why there are so many in Chesterfield and Hanover, but none in between? And most of the Hanover shops are a few miles from the county line.

"Dick's is not a gun shop."

When is an FFL not an FFL? I dunno.
