I've decided to get a 1911

So after thinking about it for a long time I'm going to start looking at a 1911. I was at the range with a buddy and shot his Springfield Loaded and it was great to shoot. However, I'm pretty ignorant in the topic of 1911's. The Loaded felt good but I heard Remington's R1 and Kimber Custom II are good models as well. I'm looking for a full size and plan on eventually budgeting $700-$800. Anyone know any other good brands or models out there that are worth checking out?

The money you want to spend and the guns you've commented on are fine... just fine. Do yourself a favor... read this (http://www.1911addicts.com/showthread.php?511-Buyer-s-guide-for-all-you-1911-addicts...), and join the 1911 Addicts forums.

Springfield is a good way to go if you're a 1911 newbie.

As is the Kimber custom II, IMHO any modern 1911 will fit the bill nicely, you might even think about a Taurus PT1911, it is well made also and is within your budget.

In your price range, I would either go with the Kimber or Springfield. I personally think Kimber has a slightly better trigger but both are fine 1911s and will start you off right.

Save up a little longer and get an STI. The $200 over your budget will be well worth it.

Or for less than you budget, the STI Spartan or RIA's would be a great choice.

All good choices mentioned so far. I got a good deal on a SR1911, and have been really happy with my purchase. Great trigger and very easy for me to find my point of aim.

S&W full size "E" Series without a rail. I payed $825 for mine. It's really nice for the price you pay. It isn't perfect, but perfection requires a lot more money.

For $700 the Kimber Custom II is a great buy.

Many good 1911's.

I personally like to go with the original manufacture for my 1911 needs so I buy Colt. My Combat Elite seems to be an excellent 1911. It's just a Colt XSE model with a blued slide.

There it is when brand new posing with my sexy Glock 20SF. 1911 fans love this shot. :D

Colt or STI, depending on your intentions. SA Range Officer or Ruger SR1911 if you can find one.

Colt.

You'll have to up your budget by about $200, but it's worth every penny. This is my first 1911 - a Colt Government XSE.

My Sig XO was $795, and it is an excellent 1911. Kinda unconventional, though.

If I were to buy another 1911 in that price range, I'd probably go with a Kimber Custom II or Ruger.

I own STI Spartan, RIA GI, Colt Government and Sig XO. Best all around is the STI. Great trigger.

But any of the above will serve you well.

They are.

It really kinda depends on what you're looking for. The Springer loaded does offer a lot for the money, and they're good guns. I just have a problem with their Brazilian pedigree. I won't buy an imported 1911.

The Kimber Custom is pretty close in price to the R1, both within your budget. But they're very differnt guns. The Custom II is a modern 1911, and a good base gun for custom work. The R1 standard is really a GI type gun, with a few subtle but critical improvements. The R1 enhanced is out of your price range (as are most other Kimbers, Colts and other higher end guns).

I've had a Kimber Stainless Target II for almost 10 year, great gun, super accurate. I've had a Colt Mk IV for 13 years, also a good gun. My R1 is only 3 months old, but is quickly becoming a favorite. That's all My 1911s at the moment, though I've had many others.

Look at Ruger, Remington, RIA, and the STI Spartan. They are all in the same price range and will all do a good job for the money. For my money I'd go with the STI Spartan lots of value and great customer service for the price.

Yep-best built and finished 1911 out there for the money imo.

I have a Sig Nitron Target 1911, Colt Rail Gun 1911, and a Ruger SR1911. All kinda-sorta in a similar $650-$950 middle price range. They all operate essentially flawlessly and I shoot a lot of .45ACP. I have had a few (very few) FTFeed over the years with my 1911's, so my point being you will have a nice 1911 in that range. Springfield Loaded is on my list too.

Enjoy!!!

1st choice - Ruger SR1911

2nd choice - Springfield

53rd choce - Kimber

I hear good things about Kimber from those who own them...but I've seen way to many rusted barrels on NIB Kimbers for them to be in my top 50.

I agree. The "in-the-white" and completely unprotected carbon steel barrels of the Kimbers are a deal breaker to me.

My Kimber is the best handgun I have ever owned. Made a lot of my friends want one. But if I was looking for a replacement tomorrow, I would try an STI SPartan and a Ruger SR 1911.

Then you'll also need to scratch Kart off your list of replacement barrels, don't come in stainless.
