I need a recipe for .303 Brit that approximates WWII ballistics. Anybody got one?

not for a handload, but my Enfield seems to like the S&B stuff I picked up at a gunshow @ $5 for 20 rounds.

See entry for 17 DEC 2003 for a decent recipe I use. Mine is founded on the Sierra 180 PSP. I haven’t tried the Sierra 174 match bullet, but the data should be interchangeable, the 174 being a touch lighter.

Only thing is, the Sierra MatchKing is not exactly cheap. You might want to consider buying some of the bulk South African ammo, pulling the bullets and using them in commercial cases with fresh primers and powder. Again, I dunno how economical this would be, but it would yield superior ammo to the GI stuff which has been stored under questionable conditions.

The SA ammo is reasonably priced and LOOKS good, but I've had several hangfires in trying it out.

Best,
Johnny

FWIW. Here's the load I use in my No4 Mk2:

Hornady #3131 (174 grain fmj bt)
CCI Benchrest Primer
Remington Brass
40.0 grains of IMR 4064
OAL= approx. 2.950-2.954

I use the same load with Remington 180 grain RNSP.
I've never shot surplus through my Enfield (which is darn near perfect and is therefore babied) so I don't know how these loads compare with surplus.
I suspect that these loads may be shorter than the surplus loads.

Addendum: Looked up data in my book. Sierra bullets reload data says "The standard cartridge used in both world wars was referred to as the Mk VII, and was loaded with a 174 grain Spitzer bullet @2440 fps."

I haven't put my load through a chrono but reload data indicates it would be probably just under 2440 fps. Hornady data shows their 174 grain roundnose hits 2400 fps with 40.4 grains of IMR 4064 when fired from a No4 Mk1. Hope this helps.

Sierra Match King 174gr.
Reloader 15, 43.5 gr.
CCI BR primer
S&B case (Winchester sometimes), trimmed to 2.202"
OAL: 3.075"

To be honest, I was quite surprised with the best load worked up during the book tests. I

Most accurate round I've loaded for the No4 action, and extremely close to Mk7 ball. I've shot it in my No4T, No4mk2 & No4mk1's all with equal success. Very good round.
