Title pretty much says it all. I got a laptop for my birthday and am sorting through the plethora of exterior ballistics software wondering if there is a certain list of programs that have been proven simple to use and reliable in the field, or that have earned your trust for long range shooting and hunting.

Being in Missoula, I'm assuming that you're looking to be shooting in the mountains. That being the case, you really need a way to make real time updates for your ballistic solutions. As your elevation changes, ballistics change. As the temperatures change, ballistics change. Unless you plan on carrying the laptop with you, or you know what the conditions for your shot will be ahead of time, a smartphone app is a lot more useful than anything on a laptop. Shooter and Ballistic are probably the two most popular apps. You'll need a way to get accurate data to input as well. That means something like a Kestrel weather meter. You need barometric pressure and temperature at the very least.
