What are the thoughts of using a 5.5 in Ruger blackhawk for hunting vs a 7.5 in? I may or may not scope it depends on my middle aged eyes.

I had a scoped 6in 629 in the past, and I don't see what difference a 1/2 inch less in the barrel would make. The shorter barrel would carry better, and I think I'll try to find a scope mount that would allow me to easily remove the scope if I just wanted some range time with it.

I see no practical difference between a 5.5" or 6" revolver for hunting. Go for it. The 7.5" will be a little harder to carry but about the same if you scope it since you probably won't be carrying it in a belt holster scoped.

There is very little velocity difference between the two. The main thing is the sight radius and well you shoot it.

longer barrel gives you a better sight radius but that is moot if scoped. You will pick up about 40-60 fps with a 7.5" compared to 5.5"

IMHO a longer barrel just lays on the target better. Velocity is not a factor. If using iron sights the longer radius is a bonus, as stated with optics the radius is moot.

If its a super blackhawk and you are really worried about velocity, you can get loads for it that will outperform the 6" 629. Loads that should never be put in a 629.

I killed a mule deer with a Model 29 with a 4" barrel and a 180 gr. factory hollow point. Where the bullet is placed is MUCH more important than barrel length.
