I am a new member so If some of my questions seem a little stupid, please bear with me.

I am looking at putting a 25.06 barrel on my 1903 A3. I am fairly familiar with the 25.06 however I would like some input on barrel length. I use a 26" barrel on another rifle and was wondering if it would be beneficial to put a 28" barrel on the A3.

I sure wouldn't go 28" unless it is a dedicated target rifle and you have a truck to haul it around in..

I put a 26" on my Mauser 25-06 when I built it, and soon cut it to 24".

Just too unhandy for coyote hunting.
I never even missed the slight velocity loss.

I bought a Ruger 77 .25-06 solely because it was the only 24" non-magnum they made at the time. Silly. I could not figure out what it was FOR and soon sold or traded it away.
But it WAS a good looking well balanced rifle.

Personally I wouldn't go shorter than 24 and 26 would be even better.

I ahve a Rem BDL with the 24" tube on it and so far it has held up to who knows how many top end loads. I get penty of velocity from most of the loads I have used through it as well.

That said, when I built my 25-06 AI I went with a 28" Broughton 5c, but I had planned it form the get go to be a long range rig. It will easily rocket a 120gr bullet out at 3350fps. I can go higher before starting to see any marks on the case head or the edges of the primers starting to square off. I simply chose this load due to it was VERY accurate and got me plenty of velocity to reach out and touch a coyote, feral hog, or a deer if the conditions were right.

I once had a FN Mauser deluxe action with a 27 inch barrel but I don't think there was any benifit for having the longer barrel. I currently shoot a 25-06 with a 24 inch barrel and I can see no difference in performance. The shorter barrel is easier to handle and fits a 48 inch gun case. Shooter

I once had a 26'' barrel 25-06 dedicated to long range prairie dog shooting. I had a 100 gr handload at 3500 that was death personified. Killed many at 500 yards. Wish I had it back.

I have a 24" and a 26" 25-06. I will put a 26" back on the 24" Ruger #1 when I get the barrel shot out. The velocity difference between 24 and 26 is noticeable.

Thanks for the imput. I have decided on the Douglas Premium XX in 26". I feel this will be sufficient.
